As part of Swansea University’s Texas Strategic partnership, a delegation of 12 academics from the University of Houston will visit Swansea University from 7th – 11th June to discuss collaborations in teaching, research and student exchange, and to deliver a showcase of public guest lectures.

The visit follows the success of the Swansea University Texas Research Showcase which took place in October 2014 when Swansea University researchers visited Texas to strengthen links with the University’s partner universities: University of Houston; Houston Methodist Research Institute; Texas A&M University; University of Texas at Austin and Rice University.

The delegation from the University of Houston, which includes representatives from Law, Social Work, English, Engineering, Optometry, Hispanic Studies and Medicine and Society, will  deliver a series of guest lectures showcasing the latest research in a number of fields.

The highly topical lecture titles include: “The growing role of immigration law in universal higher education: case studies of the United States and the EU”; and “Recovering the Written Legacy of Suppressed Languages and Cultures” which will report on a project to preserve the Hispanic heritage of the United States and which may identify parallels with, and provide lessons for Wales.

Other highlights include  discussions  about the possible establishment of a Wales Space School in conjunction with the University of Houston’s Professor Bonnie Dunbar, a former NASA astronaut, and the participation of Associate Dean of the University of Houston Law Center, Professor Marcilynn Burke who has served in President Barack Obama’s government.

The visit is likely to result in the development of new joint Master’s programmes in Law, new student exchange opportunities in English and Social Work, and new research collaborations which will add to the already strong links between Swansea and its Texas partner universities. Swansea University’s work in Texas has recently seen it shortlisted for a Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for ‘Outstanding International Strategy’.

The guest lectures will take place on 8th and 9th June at various locations on Swansea University’s Singleton Campus.  For further information please click here or contact Dr Caroline Coleman-Davies: c.c.coleman@swansea.ac.uk
