Swansea University has been recognised as one of the top 200 institutions in the world by the QS World University Subject Rankings.

The 2014 QS World University Rankings by Subject show that Swansea University has  maintained its top global 200 in Engineering (Civil and Structural) and for the first time English Language and Literature. Joining the other subjects of Engineering ( Mechanical), Geography, Law and Legal Studies, Environmental Studies and Linguistics in the top 200 in the last few years, enabling Swansea to move up the league tables further.

Pro Vice- Chancellor Hilary Lappin-Scott said: “ To be in the top 200 institutions in the world in these subject areas is outstanding. The improvements in these subject areas is just reward for the hard work which has been put into improving our standing in the world, helping us to maintain our position in the top 500 globally whilst other Universities in the UK have lost their positions to Asian country rivals.

“ The QS Stars global university ratings system also awarded Swansea University the top 5 star rating for Internationalisation, Teaching, Facilities and Engagement and the University has continued to move upward in the top 20 UK Universities for employability – one of the most important and relevant good student outcomes.

“The rankings are a recognisable measure of our performance, reputation and the excellence of the experience which we provide to our students. They show that as an ambitious, research-led institution with top quality teaching, Swansea is an excellent place to study for UK, EU and international students.

“With the number of students applying to study at Swansea University increasing by just over 56% in the last two years it shows that we are a University on the way up with facilities and an outlook geared for the opportunities and challenges of the modern world.”

Swansea University’s improvement in the subject world rankings follows on from the good news last year that the University had retained its place in the world’s top 5% of universities in the overall QS World University Rankings 2013/14.

The Complete University Guide 2014, which ranks 124 UK higher education institutions, showed that Swansea has made it into the top 20 in the UK for 12 of its subjects, including nursing, engineering, American studies, social policy and medical technology.

Other evidence paints a similar picture:

  • Sunday Times’ University Guide 2014 ranked Swansea University in the top 50 UK universities having risen 5 places and was the only university in Wales to move up the table. The guide also recognised that Swansea University was in the top 20 in the UK for graduate job prospects, with 77% of graduates in professional jobs or graduate study.
  • The University was also awarded a 5 star rating for teaching quality by the QS Stars global university ratings system, and retained its position amongst the top 500 universities in the QS World University Rankings.

Over 90% of Swansea University students are already in further education or employment within 6 months of graduating and our students will get even more of a head start with our Employability Academy, launched in 2012.
