Shabtis in the Egypt Centre by Meg Gunlach
Egypt Centre Research Seminar.
Tuesday 2nd December, 4pm-6pm in Margam 318.
All welcome.
The small funerary figurines known as shabtis are perhaps the most iconic of Ancient Egyptian artefacts. Crafted by the thousands at their peak, for the early explorers of Egypt shabtis were both prolific and portable souvenirs. Thanks to these acquisitions, shabtis now form a solid part of most museum collections. This talk will present an overview of the shabtis housed in the Egypt Centre, which represent virtually all periods and designs of shabti construction. Further points of interest will also be highlighted, including new identifications and collection histories.
