The Geologists’ Association South Wales Group (SWGA) is to hold the next in its series of lectures at Swansea University.

Title: River systems and their evolution through time

Speaker: Dr Geraint Owen, Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography and Geology, Swansea University

Date: Saturday 26th January, 2013

Time: 11 am

Venue: Wallace Lecture Theatre, Wallace Building, Swansea University

Admission: Free of charge, all welcome

Other: Refreshments will be served 30 minutes before each lecture

In this lecture, Dr Geraint Owen will look at river floodplains and explain the “greening of the continents” taking place between the Ordovician and Devonian periods. This talk will summarise the characteristics of river deposits in the rock record and make a comparison between the Old Red Sandstone of south-west Wales, which built up during the spread of land plants, with the Torridonian sandstones of north-west Scotland, which pre-date the advent of land vegetation, to assess what aspects of river systems relate to the activity of plants.

The SWGA holds talks, field meetings and other activities aimed at anyone who has interests in the Earth and its history.

Membership is open to all in the South Wales are but non-members are welcome to attend events.
