New Director of Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching Appointed

Jane Thomas, currently Deputy Head of College for Human and Health Sciences where she manages the learning and teaching remit, has been appointed as the new Director of Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching.

Jane has a wealth of experience and expertise in relation to Learning and Teaching, most recently having been awarded a highly prestigious National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy. Jane also has long standing pedagogic and professional body engagement in the field of health science and related disciplines. Jane has had considerable success in attracting HEA projects and funding to the institution and has developed external links with the HEA and other organisations.

Jane brings a wealth of professional service and practical experience to her teaching. Her teaching career spans over 25 years, from joining the School of Health as a community care lecturer she has held roles including practice teaching in the National Health Service, practice management for adult nursing, and Director of Quality. Jane will continue her role part-time as Deputy Head of College for Human and Health Sciences where she manages the learning and teaching remit, alongside being the Director of SALT.

Jane has also led numerous projects across the institution and brings considerable management and leadership experience to the role, having been the University's Superintendent of Assessment, a member of the Learning and Teaching Committee, as well as a member of the University’s Management Board, Senate and Council.

Jane will be leading her first SALT seminar entitled Enhancing learning by valuing teachingon the 12th of December at 1pm in Cafe West. This seminar will cover how we value, develop and reward teachers across the university and across the HE sector as a whole. This seminar will also see the launch of the new career pathways explicitly recognising the role of learning and teaching, amongst other areas, in staff promotion and recognition.
