Martyn grew up in Briton Ferry and attended Neath College. His sister and cousins are also alumni of Swansea and so he has a strong affinity for both the University and city. Early in his career Martyn was considering journalism as a profession and undertook internships with the Evening Post and Western Mail whilst studying for a bachelor degree in Communication at Cardiff University. However, his first full-time job upon graduation from Cardiff was in the University's international recruitment office and it was here that his passion for higher education marketing was sparked. He later returned to Cardiff Business School to complete a Masters in Strategic Marketing.
Martyn joined Swansea from the University of South Wales where he was Director of International; working closely with the Vice Chancellor and leading on global recruitment, marketing, partnerships and mobility. Prior to that, Martyn was Head of Marketing and Business Development at IDP Education Ltd, the world’s oldest and largest international student recruitment agency. At IDP he was responsible for IDP’s B2B engagement with clients and stakeholders in both the UK and the US, this included all digital deployment and positioning of IDP as thought leaders by leveraging their market research and intelligence resources. Martyn was also part of a global working group that was tasked with driving IDP’s digital transformation and corporate re-branding following the acquisition of the Hotcourses Group.
Martyn has a breadth of experience in the HE sector, introducing new digital platforms and marketing automation to enhance the student journey. He has held a range of senior marketing and recruitment positions at the Universities of Nottingham, Loughborough and with the British Council, where he was Head of Marketing and Communications for what was the Education UK Partnership. During his time at the Council, Martyn completed a further postgraduate qualification in international human resource management and development from the University of Manchester.
Outside of work Martyn spends his time as a chauffeur to his two young sons and enjoys watching rugby when he can and playing golf badly.
