LLM Teacher Scoops Learning and Teaching Excellence Award

In the Postgraduate Legal Studies Department, we are very proud of the quality of our teaching. ‌Our teachers are all at the cutting edge of their discipline; most have published extensively in the field of commercial and maritime law, and some in addition are able to give the benefit of their own practical experience to students as a result of having worked in top firms.

Tettenborn award We are, therefore, delighted to note that this has been acknowledged by the University itself, with the award of prize to one of our members. Professor Andrew Tettenborn has, after many years, been awarded a well-deserved prize for excellence in learning and teaching, following spontaneous nomination from within the student body. This award is completely student-led and has the object of giving our students the opportunity to recognise excellent quality and show how that teaching quality has had a real impact on their academic experience.

Professor Tettenborn is one of the leading lights of common law in research terms. He has published extensively in the field and he is either the author or a contributor to major texts in the field such as, Marsden’s Collisions at Sea (now in its 14th edition) and Fleming's The Law of Torts (now in its 10th edition). Naturally, the fact that he is at the forefront of his subject informs his teaching and students often have the opportunity to learn from him not only what the law says but how it should be reformed to meet commercial realities and demands. His teaching is truly research-led and adds to Swansea’s reputation for informed course content which is relevant to the modern commercial world. Professor Tettenborn is a barrister and has done pupillage in commercial chambers dealing with shipping and commercial disputes. This enables him to share with students not only his legal knowledge but also a wealth of practical know-how about legal practice and chartering trends that he has accumulated over the years.  Any student studying the subject needs to be familiar with these cases and it is great advantage for our students to hear about them from a person who was involved in litigating them.

Commenting on the Award, Professor Soyer, Head of the Postgraduate Legal Studies Department, said: “Professor Tettenborn is an absolutely excellent teacher and a role model to the Department and the College. He is approachable, caring and professional in all his dealings with his students. His teaching style is unique and remarkable. I am not surprised that so many of our student have nominated him for this award. I can think of no one who deserves this award more.  We are so lucky to have excellent teachers like him teaching in our LLM programes at Swansea.”
