School of Law announces appointment of Professor Joel Trachtman

The School of Law is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Joel Trachtman as Distinguished Research Professor of International Economic Law.

Professor Joel Trachtman, our new Distinguished Research Professor of International Economic Law, is one of the leading international law scholars of his generation. His most recent book, The Future of International Law: Global Government, to be published by Cambridge University Press this year, shows how increasing social change in globalisation, development, demography, democratization and technology will require greater international cooperation and a greater role for international law. His work includes The Economic Structure of International Law, published by Harvard University Press in 2008, one of the most influential books on the economic analysis of international law. Anne Marie Slaughter, Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University, former Dean of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, has lauded the book as ‘an elegantly and clearly argued contribution to the burgeoning literature connecting social science to international law’.

Professor Trachtman has authored numerous  articles and has edited two important books, one on the constitutionalization of international law, and the other  on developing countries in the WTO legal system. Professor Trachtman specialises in linking international law to its political and economic rationales, and in using methods from the social sciences to examine international law. He has served on the board of editors of the American Journal of International Law and the Journal of International Economic Law and on the Advisory Board of the European Journal of International Law. Professor Trachtman has degrees from Columbia College and Harvard Law School. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard International Law Journal. He is Professor of International Law at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Massachusetts.

Prof John Linarelli, Head of Swansea Law expressed his delight at the new appointment: "We are honoured to welcome to Swansea Law a tremendously talented legal scholar with a wealth of experience in International Economic Law and Public International Law. Prof Trachtman’s appointment strengthens Swansea Law’s position as a global law school. His world leading research enriches our community of learning and inquiry at Swansea Law and across all of Swansea University and beyond".
