Internal LLM Mooting Competition Comes to an Excellent Close on 9th March

Building on the success of our previous mooting accomplishments, the Postgraduate Legal Studies Department has run its third competitive mooting event to great success.

Throughout the year, the Department offers our LLM students mooting training, providing them with tailored guidance and weekly training classes under the supervision of our Moot Mistress, Miss Marilena Papagrigoraki overseen by members of staff, Dr Leloudas and Ms Tabetha Kurtz-Shefford.

The classes culminated in our Internal Moot Competition, 2014-2015 in the final weeks of February and first week of March. Impressively, almost twenty students participated in two round-robin stages before the two highest-scoring teams met head to head in front of their peers for the challenging final (the two teams were: Miss Marine Jutau – Mr Martin Karst who represented the Claimants and Miss María Magdalena Oriol Lapetra – Mr Sebastian Agustin Trigub who represented the Respondents).

After a robust moot of heavy grilling from the arbitral panel (consisting of IISTL founder Professor Rhidian Thomas, Professor Simon Baughen and Dr Theodora Nikaki) and stellar performances from both teams, it was Miss Jutau and Mr Karst who were the ultimate winners.

Commenting on the event, Ms Kurtz-Shefford said: “I am very proud of all of our participants, particularly our two finalist teams, who have worked extremely hard over the past few weeks. This competition was a great way to showcase their substantial talent for persuasive legal argument and problem analysis. It gave them a chance to put what they have been learning throughout their LLM programme into practice and I am so glad to see our students reap the rewards for all of their efforts. I am also grateful to the teaching team who supported this event by acting as arbitrators and the rest of the LLM cohort who showed up in numbers to support their peers during the final!”
