College of Law REF 2014 success
Swansea University’s College of Law has achieved a discernable improvement in the most recent Research Excellence Framework Exercise (REF) 2014 increasing its standard weighted average score to 2.7 from 2.45, which was achieved in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008. This means that 60 percent of research conducted within the College of Law has been rated to be world-leading or of international excellence, and that 95 per cent has been recognised to have achieved an international standard.
The RAE is an evaluation of the quality of research underway across the UK higher education sector. The results are published in the form of quality profiles produced for each area of research activity (outputs, impact studies and environment) submitted to the REF for evaluation.
Associate Professor Andrew Beale OBE, Acting Head of the College of Law at Swansea University, said: “We put forward over 2/3rds of our research active staff for assessment in the REF 2014. This result shows how much the Law College has progressed over the course of the last two decades. We have improved our position in every National Research Exercise since 2001 and today we have consolidated our position as centre of excellence in terms of research. We are very proud that 60 percent of research undertaken by members of the College is deemed to be either world leading or internationally excellent. We now have confidence to build upon these solid foundations and achieve an even better result in the next REF in 2020”
