Inspiring Woman 2020

Originally from Mayotte, a small island off the coast of Southeast Africa. Dr Youmna Mouhamad has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Aix-Marseille II, a Master’s degree from the University of Leeds and a PhD from Sheffield University. Youmna is currently a Technology Transfer Fellow at SPECIFIC in Swansea University and is working on industrial coatings. Her hard work is evident through both her academic and personal successes. Youmna sits on the organising committee of Soapbox Science Swansea which is an initiative that invites female scientist to share their research; to inspire young women to pursue STEM subject.  Soapbox Swansea was shortlisted for Swansea University’s Outstanding Contribution to Public Engagement award last month. She is also the leader of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students in Engineering Network. This network aims to progress racial equality by raising awareness of the challenges that BAME students and staff experience, then suggest interventions or strategies that look into overcoming the challenges. Since the Networks launch in October 2019, working with the committee, they have organised two events and invited more than 100 people to learn and reflect on the importance of sponsorship for the career advancement of BAME and on organisational culture and racial inequality.  Feedback from the most recent talk:

  • “We need more talks like this”,
  • “We need a conference" and "everyone needs to hear this".
  • “Future students and staff will benefit from her work and advocacy” - Dr Jenny Baker

Dr Youmna Mouhamad has managed to secure funding for the establishment of a pilot program. This program puts self-leadership at the foundation of authentic leadership by bringing together a coaching and leadership course tailored to BAME.

Alongside her work, Youmna is the founder of Myana Natural. She has developed, tested and patented an innovative product to ease the maintenance of afro hair. The underrepresentation of black women within STEM and investment sectors results in a lack of innovation with products that affect them.  Youmna’s product has the potential to dramatically improve the lives of many. She is a constant reminder to stay true to your values and what you believe in, to never give up and to be brave. Her warm demeanour, motivational conversations and supportive temperament, inspires all those around her from her peers to senior managers.
