As part of Swansea University’s Texas Strategic partnership, a delegation academics from the University of Houston visited Swansea University earlier this month (June) to discuss collaborations in teaching, research and student exchange, and to deliver a showcase of public guest lectures.
The visit followed the success of the Swansea University Texas Research Showcase which took place in October 2014 when Swansea University researchers visited Texas to strengthen links with the University’s partner universities: University of Houston; Houston Methodist Research Institute; Texas A&M University; University of Texas at Austin and Rice University.
The delegation from the University of Houston delivered guest lectures showcasing the latest research in a number of fields.
The highly topical lecture titles included "Understanding and Addressing the Unique Needs and Rights of Immigrant Children in the Child Welfare System" by Prof Alan Dettlaff and "Mental Health Disorders & Treating Depression through Acupuncture" by Prof Patrick Leung, with both Professors coming from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work.
The visit is likely to result in the development of new student exchange opportunities in Social Work and new research collaborations which will add to the already strong links between Swansea and its Texas partner universities. Swansea University’s work in Texas has recently seen it shortlisted for a Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for ‘Outstanding International Strategy’.
