Swansea University’s College of Human and Health Sciences has welcomed a group of visiting academics and students from the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work.
The group discussed collaborations in teaching, research and student exchange and delivered a showcase of guest lectures.
The visit was led by Dr. Patrick Leung,Professor and Director of the Office for International Social Work Education in the University of Houston. Dr. Leung was accompanied by Dr. Monit Cheung, Professor at the Graduate College of Social Work; Dr Robin Gearing, Associate Professor and Ann Liberman, Director of Alumni, Career & Professional Development.
As part of their visit, Dr. Leung and Ann Liberman spoke to an audience of academics and students about ‘Professionalism in Social Work’. Dr. Gearing also presented on the topic of ‘Adolescents with Serious Mental Illnesses: Improving Treatment Adherence and Service Utilization’.
The Texan delegation met with staff and students from the College’s Department of Public Health, Policy and Social Sciences. They attended lectures on Social Policy, participating in an advocacy session delivered by Mr Andrew Dunning and a comparative Social Policy discussion hosted by Dr. Sarah Hillcoat-Nalletamby. They also attended a session led by Professor Fiona Verity and the Social Work team on ‘Social Work and Continuing Professional Education & Learning (CPEL) – a Window on Swansea University’.
The group visited a number of external organisations such as the Ethnic Youth Support Team (EYST) and met with Child and Family Services in Swansea for a presentation on the Science of Safety. They were also treated to tours of both Swansea University campuses and were shown the sights of Swansea.
One of visitors said: “The hospitality of the faculty and students was amazing. I learned a wealth of knowledge while visiting the college. It was a one of a kind, life changing adventure.”
