The aim of the SLA is to develop leadership capacity of undergraduate and pre-registration students within Swansea University, specifically the College of Human and Health Sciences and the Medical School
The SLA lead by Beryl Mansel with Professor Judy Mckimm and Professor Sharon Williams have developed a programme based upon a national initiative by the Council of Deans of Health and the Burdett Trust for Nursing’s award-winning Student Leadership Programme. The objectives of the national Student Leadership Programme were to support 150 students, drawn from across UK nursing, midwifery and allied health programmes, and provide them with leadership training, networking and mentoring. Drawing from and building on the success and lessons learned from the national project, the primary work of the SLA will be to establish an interprofessional leadership programme that is designed to encourage and support students to develop and apply leadership qualities to their own personal, professional and organisational context, with direct relevance to future employers. First year students from all health and social care programmes in CHHS and SUMS will be invited to apply for the first cohort in March 2019 and, from this pool, 30 will be selected for the 3-day programme. The focus is not on a leadership title or role but on students gaining insight into their own leadership approach and developing the confidence to lead through inspiring, influencing and supporting others. The creation of an interprofessional community of practice is a central tenet of the SLA.
On the 1st November 2018 the Executive Director of the Council of Deans will lead a Leadership Taster session for selected students in order to promote both the National Student Leadership Programme and Swansea University Student Leadership Academy 2019.
