Student Nurse’s scholarship to attend her first international conference

A student nurse from Swansea University’s College of Human and Health Sciences is to attend her first international conference after winning a scholarship from the RCN (Royal College of Nursing) Foundation.

Joanna Otteson, who is a second year mental health nursing student, will attend the RCN International Centenary Conference in London this November after finding out about the scholarship opportunity on Facebook.

Joanna said: “As new students we are encouraged to become members of the RCN. The RCN plays a fundamental role in our training, directing the content of our learning, and providing guidelines to work by once we qualify, as well as providing support and learning opportunities.

“We often receive adverts for conferences and other learning events which always look really interesting, but are usually either too far away, or too expensive to be accessible to us. When I saw the invitation to apply for a Scholarship place on the RCN Students Facebook page I thought it would be a great opportunity to experience something usually out of my reach.

“The conference features speakers from all over the UK who are specialists in their field, as well as guests from organisations around the world, including the World Health Organisation. There are also several lecturers from Swansea University presenting there too, so hopefully I’ll see a few familiar faces!

“I hope to be inspired by some of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable nursing professionals in the world!” Joanna adds “I hope to take something from the conference which will help me stay positive, improve my practice, and benefit my patients in the future.”
