Adult Nursing student Liz has poem published in Nursing Times

Second year Adult Nursing student Liz Arlow has written a poem exploring the importance of, and difficulties associated with maintaining good communication with patients. The poem entitled 'I'm off to see Brenda in flat number 6' has been published in the Nursing Times (online).

I'm off to see Brenda in flat number 6

I’m off to see Brenda

In flat number 6

It’s such a shame no words escape from her lips.

As I walk in her room

I try to say “Hi”

But remember she doesn’t respond

No matter how hard I try.

I’ve been told by my colleagues

That she’s deaf you see

So no matter what I say

She doesn’t interact with me.

As I gather the dressings

To help heal her wounds

There is no sound

In this big unloved room.

As I dress her legs

She stares at me

Those eyes look so empty

I wish you would talk to me.

As I gather my things

And prepare to leave

I think about saying “Goodbye”

But remember she can’t hear me.

As I close the door

And walk down the hall

I think of Brenda wrapped in her shawl.

I’m sure I hear crying

But wait, this can be so

It can’t be Brenda in flat number 6

As no sounds or words

Ever escape from her lips.

My name is Brenda

I live in flat number 6

It’s such a shame no words

Escape from her lips.

As the nurse walks in

I try to say “Hi”

But remember she doesn’t respond

No matter how hard I try.

She’s been told by my family

That I’m deaf you see

So no matter what I say

She doesn’t interact with me.

As she gathers the dressings

To help heal my wounds

She makes no sound

In my big loved room.

As she dresses my legs

She stares at me

Her eyes look so empty

I wish she would talk to me.

As she gathers her things

And prepares to leave

I think about saying “Goodbye”

But remember she doesn’t respond to me.

As the door closes shut

And she walks down the hall

I wrap myself tightly

In my loved warm shawl.

As the tears escape me

I’m left asking why

No words or sounds escape

From her lips

No matter how hard I try.
