Gareth Richards BSc Psychology

What did you enjoy the most about the course and studying at Swansea University?

I liked that the department was relatively small so it was easy to feel a part of it. I also liked how the campus was all in one place, meaning that I would see people I knew all the time.

What skills did you learn from completing the course and how did they help you get a job?

Amongst other things, the courses I completed at Swansea University (BSc Psychology and MSc Research Methods in Psychology) provided me with knowledge of how research works, how to use statistics, how to design and run studies, and how to collaborate with researchers.

What have you gone on to do since graduating?

I completed an MSc in Research methods in psychology at Swansea University after graduating from the BSc Psychology programme. Since then I have been working towards completing a PhD in psychology at Cardiff University.

Where are you currently working? What are you enjoying about it?

I am currently in the third year of a PhD programme in Psychology at Cardiff University. I like doing what I do now because it allows me to effectively use the skills that I developed throughout my undergraduate and master’s courses. It also allows me to develop into a more effective researcher.

Is your current job related to the degree? If yes, how?

Yes, it is a research degree position.

What would your advice be to new students entering the college?

If you want to carry on with psychology/research after finishing your degree, get involved with lots of things, make contacts and make sure that people get to know who you are - you never know when one of those people might be looking for a PhD student/postdoc etc.. and they might remember you!
