Palliative and End of Life Care Course for HCSWs (20 Credits)

This module is designed to be accessed by health care support workers (HCSWs) who often care for people who are expected to die in the near future. The module will help the HCSW to understand the philosophy, principles and practices of palliative care and explore how these are used to deliver satisfactory end of life care. Pain and symptom management is studied with holistic methods of assessment being focused upon.

• The history and future development of palliative care
• Principles and practices of palliative care 
• Current themes in end of life care
• Communication theory and skills
• Holistic pain and symptom assessment and management
• Multi-social and multi-cultural issues surrounding death and dying
• Ethical challenges in palliative care
• Political and social context of palliative care in Wales
