Brief biography: In Rome by age 12. Served in cavalry in Germany under future emperor Vespasian. Wrote on cavalry and Germanic wars, went on expedition to search for the source of Danube. Procurator of Gaul, Africa, Spain under Nero. Wrote on oratory, language, more history. Natural History completed in 77. Vespasian appointed him commander of the fleet, which was at Misenum, nr. Vesuvius, so he happened to be near by when it erupted in 79. Died observing it, age 56.
