The module aims to provide the student with a broad overview of biological chemistry, explain the differences between different classes of compounds from both a chemical perspective and a biological function emphasis. Students will appreciate the different functions of these bio-molecules and gain an understanding of key examples of each in relation to human biology.
Foundation Applied Medical Sciences Skills Development 2
The module will provide the student with a diversity of laboratory and scientific skills in relation to the undertaking of undergraduate practical sessions in a safe manner and develop skills including molarity calculations, biological extractions, basic chromatography, an introduction into anatomical dissection and physiology.

This module is designed to develop the skills required for students of genetics and medical genetics.Students will
meet with tutors and be given a series of assignments designed to develop skills in key areas such as essay writing,
presentations and general numeracy.Joint sessions will cover generic skills such as internet searching for scientific
sources, referencing and plagiarism.

The module provides a broad study of the interactions between chemical processes and biological systems. It addresses the chemical processes used by organisms to utilize chemicals for energy production, structural functions and as building blocks of macromolecules.

Metabolic Regulation: Enzymes & Signal Transduction
This module reviews the basic elements of enzyme kinetics, including their mechanism and inhibition. The control of enzyme function by allosteric mechanisms is considered together with an appreciation of the significance of sigmoid kinetics. An overview of coenzymes and (metal) co-factors in enzyme function is given together with a description of the role played by vitamins in co-enzyme production. The module concludes with an overview of enzymes from extremophiles and their applications.
Doctors, patients & the goals of medicine
The educational intention of the module is to allow the student to consider the contemporary practice of Medicine
within the United Kingdom. This will include understanding the professional regulation, financial constraints and
societal and personal challenges, within which medicine and other healthcare activities are practiced.

Techniques in Molecular Biology
The module will provide a sound theoretical basis to a comprehensive range of biomolecular techniques currently employed in molecular genetics and biochemistry. Particular emphasis is placed on DNA recombinant technology, next generation sequencing, transcriptomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry.
The modules seeks to expand upon the first year metabolism module (PM-127) to encompass the metabolism of other biomolecules and further additions to central glycolysis and the TCA cycle.
The module discusses the uptake and metabolism of carbohydrates other than glucose, the use of carbohydrates in the pentose phosphate pathway and disease implications.
Fatty acid and cholesterol metabolism and transport systems are discussed, alongside clinical implications and modern therapeutic drugs that target these pathways.
The pathways of amino acid synthesis and degradation in humans are described along with an introduction to the urea cycle.

Skills for Researchers
The modern scientist graduate is expected to have gained extensive laboratory-based experience and this is certainly essential for any student intent on pursuing a research-based career. Skills for Researchers provides students with the opportunity to acquire the core skills to be able to conduct, analyse, interpret and present scientific experiments. A large proportion of the module will be spent in the laboratory gaining hands-on experience. Skills acquired in this module will form the basis for future experimental work, including the final year project. Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback to peers and engage with a variety of online learning materials.
Nucleic acids: components, metabolism and modification
The module provides an understanding of the metabolism of nucleic acids and the biological relevance of their natural modification. The use of modified nucleic acid products clinically is also covered.
Biomedical Laboratory Techniques
The module will provide practical and in depth theory of applications and equipment available to MSci students in the biomedical research laboratories based at the Medical School. The module will provide guidelines and rationale for experimental design, and data and statistical analysis.

Omics Techniques and their Application to Genomic Medicine
This module explores the state of the art genomics techniques used for DNA sequencing (e.g. targeted approaches, whole exome and whole genome sequencing) and RNA sequencing. This module will include introductory bioinformatics approaches required for the analysis of genomic data, which will provide a solid foundation for the Bioinformatics module. The module will also cover the use of array based methodologies and RNA sequencing in estimating levels of protein expression, micro RNAs and gene manipulation technologies. A comprehensive introduction to metabolomics and proteomics, which are important for the functional interpretation of genomic data and discovery of disease biomarkers will also be included.
