About

Dr Sharon Parsons is a Senior Research Officer within the Diabetes Research Group, Swansea University Medical School. Sharon joined the University in 2012 to co-ordinate a large, multi-centre trial looking at self-monitoring of blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes. This subsequently became the topic of her PhD thesis, which she completed in 2019.

Previously Sharon was Network Manager of the NIHR Thames Valley Diabetes Local Research Network based in Oxford and prior to that R&D Manager at the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Trust. Her early career was based with Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster Health Authority Public Health Department who supported her to undertake a Master degree in Public Health Medicine.

Career Highlights

Research

Dr Parsons’s primary research area is diabetes. She is particularly interested in self-management of diabetes and the psychological and social aspects of living with diabetes. Her PhD thesis focused on self-monitoring blood glucose in non-insulin treated type 2 diabetes, which has developed an interest in the potential benefits and uses of all forms of blood glucose monitoring. Sharon is currently collaborating with NHS colleagues to evaluate diabetes prevention programmes.
