About

David received his BSc in Pharmacology from the University of Liverpool and PhD in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry from the University of Sheffield. David joined Swansea Medical School as a Reader in 2004 and was appointed to a personal Chair in 2005. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Fellow of the linnean Society, and a Fulbright Scholar. He was awarded a DSc from Swansea University in 2011. He has worked on cytochrome P450 biodiversity for over 25 years. He has spent considererable time studying P450 genes/enzymes as a visiting Fellow to laboratories in the USA, including Vanderbilt University Medical School and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), Human Health and Ocean Sciences. He has had research support (PI and/or co-I) from the BBSRC, NIH, NERC, Wellcome Trust, Leverhulme Trust, Nuffield Foundation and The Royal Society. In 2016/17 he was awarded a highly prestigious UK-US Fulbright Scholarship.

Taught Modules

PM-251 Microbial Molecular Genetics

The control systems governing gene expression in prokaryotic cells are explored and the molecular basis for gene regulation introduced. Practical skills in obtaining and analysing data on a bacterial system are developed. The module then assesses the structure of the bacterial genome and how genetic analysis can be used to investigate structure and function of individual components of that genome. Specific examples explored in depth are the genetics of recombination and DNA repair. The technologies used for functional genomic analysis of fully sequenced bacteria are described with reference to analysis of human pathogens. Finally, the module includes examples of synthetic biology applied to bacteria.
PM-344 Capstone Project

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.
PMGM12 Omics Techniques and their Application to Genomic Medicine

This module explores the state of the art genomics techniques used for DNA sequencing (e.g. targeted approaches, whole exome and whole genome sequencing) and RNA sequencing. This module will include introductory bioinformatics approaches required for the analysis of genomic data, which will provide a solid foundation for the Bioinformatics module. The module will also cover the use of array based methodologies and RNA sequencing in estimating levels of protein expression, micro RNAs and gene manipulation technologies. A comprehensive introduction to metabolomics and proteomics, which are important for the functional interpretation of genomic data and discovery of disease biomarkers will also be included.
PMGM17 Dissertation Project

The module is for students to build on their previous knowledge, skills and experience by undertaking a laboratory based or suitable non-laboratory based project on a specific subject related to genomics.
