EDC201
Children culture and language
This module explores how children co-construct their own cultures through everyday interactions, and also considers the multiple cultures that children belong to, globally and within Wales. It will explore ethnocentrism and cultural relativity by discussing recent media coverage, and support students to debate these issues in lectures. Students will also be supported to consider their own cultural heritage and to develop an awareness of the importance of cultural knowledge and connections for children and families. The role of language in shaping cultural identity will also be discussed, with a particular emphasis on Welsh cultural heritage and language.

Doctoral Research Methods in Educational Research
This module presents an in-depth exploration of methodology, methods and data analysis, building on the introductory work conducted in EDD 800 and EDD 801 of the Professional Doctorate in Education (EDD).
Students undertaking this module will be expected to have already developed an advanced appreciation of the practical and theoretical context of their research and are likely to have already begun considering their proposed methodology and methods.
The core of the module is a block teaching week of five days, supported by preparatory material, additional resources and monthly online seminars. The teaching week will critically evaluate a variety of methodological positions, further enhancing student understanding of ontology, epistemology and axiology and will critically evaluate a variety of techniques of data analysis, examining both qualitative and quantitative methods. The module leader will ensure a variety of perspectives are presented and discussed, using a broad teaching team and guest presentations.
This module will encompass both qualitative and quantitative overviews, with specific sessions then being tailored to the requirements of the class. At this point in the programme, module staff will be aware of the needs of the students and will draw on resources as appropriate.
The assessments will critically evaluate data collection and analysis methods, in a chosen field of research.

Preparation for Thesis
The module serves to prepare students for the completion of their thesis within the PGR stage of their EdD. Students undertaking this module will be expected to have already developed an advanced appreciation of the practical and theoretical context of their research and are likely to have already begun considering their proposed methodology and methods.
This module will build on these developing skills and, working closely with a member of teaching staff, the student will begin detailed preparation for their thesis. This may take the form of a scoping study in their areas of interest, a detailed research plan, or a small scale research project.
The assessment will provide a mandate for their final research project and will require students to organise knowledge gained through previous modules to plan for their future research in a systematic and critical way, ensuring that their developing research proposal fulfils doctoral requirements.

The Philosophy and Ethics of Social Science Research
This module has been developed as part of the design of the suite of Professional Doctorates within the SoSS. This will be the first module in the series of compulsory modules and will provide the foundation of the student¿s study by addressing the philosophy and ethics of conducting social research. It will provide a secure basis for their subsequent learning by providing students with the opportunity to acquire the skills to reflect on their positionality within the research process by asking questions such as:
How is our understanding of social issues constructed?
What from my experience, background and values impacts on the research process and findings?

Understanding and Presenting Research Literature
This module presents an in-depth exploration of the skills needed to critically engage with literature in the field of study, building on the introductory work conducted in the first module of the Professional Doctorate - The Philosophy and Ethics of Social Science Research.
Students undertaking this module will have begun considering the philosophical positions that inform their research area, and this module aims to enhance students¿ systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge further through an in-depth engagement with relevant literature in the field. Students will be introduced to the importance of critically evaluating research literature and will be supported to critically review and analyse current issues within their organisational and/or professional context through critical engagement with relevant publications.
The assessments will critically engage in the literature in a chosen field of research and support students in developing a sound theoretical, and/or conceptual framework for their research.

An Introduction to Reflective Practice
This module aims to introduce students to approaches to reflective practice and support them to constructively critique theories and their own practice through detailed observation and analysis. It creates links between theory and practice by relating concurrently taught content to the practice observed and recorded in placement. By utilising the National Occupational Standards as a basis for reflection, it supports students ongoing development of a portfolio of professional practice which identifies current practice strengths whilst identifying their own professional learning targets and steps for success.

Communication, Language and Literacy
This module explores how children co-construct their own identity through communication and language within everyday interactions. It considers the role of language in learning and shaping cultural identity, with a particular emphasis on Welsh cultural heritage and language. It also considers the multiple cultures that children belong to, globally and within Wales. It will explore ethnocentrism and cultural relativity and support students to debate these issues in lectures.
Students will also be supported to consider their own cultural heritage and to develop an awareness of the importance of cultural knowledge and connections for children and families.

Early childhood transitions
Throughout children¿s early years there are many transitions that they will engage with, including small transitions from sleep to waking, from liquids to solid food, to transitioning from home to other places such as early childhood centres, schools or visiting friends, relatives and other community members. It is also possible that some children will experience transitions through various foster homes, and often through multiple after-school activities. Transitions for children with ALN, in personal health, socio-economic circumstances and environmental changes when moving house, school or emigrating are also relevant throughout various childhoods. Linguistic transitions will be explored in children who move from one language to another, with a particular focus on issues around refugee families. This module will explore these issues, with a focus on the role of the adult in supporting children through these various changes in the most effective ways, particularly when children transition from early childhood settings to New Entrant classes as they move to school. Students will have the opportunity to reflect as a professional on transitions they have made personally, and how they were managed, as well as discussing the transition they are about to make from their degree into the workplace or further study. They will then be supported in applying their knowledge to real-life scenarios to critically evaluate what their role might be for children experiencing similar situations, through the support of relevant and recent academic research.

Childhood Studies
This module will introduce students to key issues and ideas relating to childhood across time and culture. The module will be structured around four main themes: concepts of childhood, constructing childhood, childhood across time and culture and issues relating to childhood across children¿s services. Childhood is considered from a multi-disciplinary perspective in relation to aspects of professional educational practice and related services.
