Cwblheais fy ngradd israddedig mewn Daeareg ym Mhrifysgol Caerlŷr yn 2003 - 2007 ac arbenigo mewn geocemeg, petrogenesis igneaidd a folcanoleg gorfforol. Yna symudais i Gaeredin lle cwblheais PhD a oedd yn canolbwyntio ar ddeffrocronoleg haenau teffra silicig Holocene yng Ngwlad yr Iâ (https://www.era.lib.ed.ac.uk/handle/1842/5834). Ar ôl gorffen y PhD des i i Abertawe i weithio fel Cynorthwyydd Ymchwil Ôl-ddoethurol yn y grŵp ymchwil teffra ac astudio gorwelion micro-ludw yng ngharnau Iâ'r Ynys Las. Yn 2012 symudais i Brifysgol Glasgow lle dechreuais ddysgu Gwyddorau Daear ac roeddwn yn gydlynydd cwrs ar gyfer pob modiwl Lefel 1 cyn dychwelyd i Abertawe i ddechrau yn fy swydd addysgu bresennol.

    .Bydd y modiwl hwn yn ymchwilio i agweddau peryglus amgylchedd y Ddaear a pherthynas y gymdeithas â nhw. Bydd egwyddorion cychwynnol yn cynnwys diffiniad o berygl naturiol, trychineb, risg a cholled ac ymagweddau at leihau risg a rheoli trychinebau. Mae¿r prif fathau o berygl naturiol yn cael eu hastudio er mwyn deall sut maent yn gweithredu, ble, a pha mor aml maent yn debygol o ddigwydd. Caiff canlyniadau peryglus eu hystyried, yn ogystal â sut gall y gymdeithas ymateb i ddigwyddiadau peryglus. Mae agweddau allweddol yn cynnwys trafod peryglon cynradd ac eilradd, rhagweld a monitro peryglon, a deall sut y gellir lleihau eu heffeithiau niweidiol. This module investigates hazardous aspects of Earth¿s natural environment and how society relates to them. Introductory principles include the definition of natural hazard, disaster, risk and loss, and approaches to reducing risk and managing disasters. Major types of natural hazard are studied in order to understand how they operate, where, and how frequently they are likely to occur. Hazardous consequences are explored, as well as how society can respond to hazardous events. Key aspects include discussion of primary and secondary hazards, prediction, forecasting and monitoring of hazards, and understanding how their harmful effects can be minimised. Natural hazards considered during this module include volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, landslides, extreme weather events, flooding, avalanches and Mega Hazards. The module will also consider the concept of ¿Humans as Hazards¿. Lectures consider general principles as well as case studies. Practical classes reinforce concepts learned in lectures. The practical aspect of the work will culminate in a disaster management simulation day.

Mae her cynaliadwyedd yn sylweddol a bydd y darlithoedd yn eich darparu â¿r wybodaeth a fydd ei hangen arnoch i ymwneud â Nodau Datblygu Cynaliadwy¿r This module is an introduction to global environmental change and explores aspects of the issue of sustainability as it affects everyday lives. The challenge of sustainability is significant and the lectures will provide you with the information needed to engage with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

    Mae¿r modiwl hwn yn cynnwys hyfforddiant gwaith maes a sgiliau GIS i ddaearyddwyr dynol a ffisegol. Rhan 1: Mae¿r rhan yma yn cyflwyno egwyddorion a thechnegau allweddol a ddefnyddir mewn gwaith maes yn nisgyblaethau Daearyddiaeth, astudiaethau amgylcheddol ac astudiaethau defnyddio tir. Mae¿n cynnig profiad o ddefnyddio amryw o ddulliau a thechnegau gwaith maes er mwyn casglu a dadansoddi gwybodaeth mewn perthynas â Daearyddiaeth, yr amgylchedd a defnyddio tir. Dysgir y modiwl ar y cyd â staff o Brifysgol Bangor a Phrifysgol Aberystwyth a dysgir y myfyrwyr o¿r sefydliadau yma hefyd ar y modiwl. Dysgir rhan yma'r modiwl yn ystod penwythnos preswyl. Rhan 2: Prosiect GIS. Bydd yr elfen hon o¿r modiwl yn rhoi cyflwyniad i fyfyrwyr i sgiliau allweddol Mapio, Data Gofodol a GIS. Bydd myfyrwyr hefyd yn dysgu sut i gyfeirio lleoliad gofodol nodweddion amgylcheddol ar arwyneb y Ddaear, deall sut mae systemau cyfeirio¿n berthnasol i leoliadau daearyddol ar fap gwastad a dysgu sut i weithio gyda data o amrywiaeth o systemau cyfeirio gofodol.

Rhoddir sylw i¿r prif beryglon naturiol canlynol: llosgfynyddoedd, daeargrynfeydd, tsunami, stormydd, tannau gwyllt, eirlithriadau a thirlithriadau.     Amcan y Modiwl yw i ddarparu gwerthusiad manwl o'r prosesau sydd yn gweithredu o fewn basn afon cyfoes. Yn gyntaf, ystyrir system y llethr, lle mae prosesau mas symudiad a phrosesau creu sianeli yn bwysig. Mae gweddill y cwrs yn canolbwyntio ar brosesau sydd yn weithredol o fewn system y sianel. Ymhob darlith, cefnogir theori sianel gan enghreifftiau o astudiaethau achos, gan roi sylw penodol i oblygiadau prosesau geomorffolegol naturiol ar reolaeth afon. This module aims to deliver a thorough appraisal of processes that are in operation within contemporary river basins. Firstly, consideration will be given to the slope system, where processes of mass movement and channel creation are important. The remainder of the course focuses on processes that are active within the channel system. In each lecture, theory relating to the channel will be supported by examples of case studies, giving particular attention to the consequences of natural geomorphology for river management.

    Mae'r modiwl yma yn ymwneud ag adnabod a diffinio cwestiynau daearyddol o fewn lleoliad maes penodol, a defnyddio'r sgiliau, dealltwriaeth, a thechnegau daearyddol priodol i ymdrin â'r cwestiynau hyn. Yr amcanion cyffredinol yw arsylwi, dadansoddi a chyrraedd dealltwriaeth o'r wahanol dirluniau daearyddol a nodweddion cynhenid y lleoliadau penodol dan astudiaeth. Mae'r modiwl yn cynnwys wythnos o waith maes mewn lleoliad penodedig (gall fod yn dramor), a darlithoedd paratoadol a dilynol a dosbarthiadau arall. The module is concerned with identifying and defining geographical questions within a specific field location and applying the relevant geographical skills, knowledge and techniques to these questions. The general aims are to observe, analyse and achieve an understanding of the varied geographical landscapes and inherent features of a designated fieldweek location. The module comprises a week's fieldwork at a designated, normally foreign, location and preparatory and post-fieldweek lectures and other classes.

Trafodwyd ystod o ddulliau ystadegol, a defnyddiwyd enghreifftiau ymarferol a syniadau cysyniadol i egluro eu defnydd. Rhoddwyd pwyslais arbennig ar osod y technegau hyn o fewn cyd-destun ymchwil Daearyddol ehangach. Defnyddiwyd meddalwedd ystadegol pwerus yn y sesiynau cyfrifiadurol ymarferol, sy'n cydymffurfio a safonau diwydiannol. Yn ogystal i ystadegau, mae'r modiwl hefyd yn cyflwyno myfyrwyr i gyflwyno a dadansoddi data gan ddefnyddio Systemau Wybodaeth Ddaearyddol ('GIS'), ac yn rhoi trosolwg o'r testun gydag enghreifftiau ymarferol. This module examines the importance of statistical data analysis in quantitative research in both Human and Physical Geography. A range of statistical methods with wide application are discussed, using theoretical explanation and practical examples to illustrate their use. Particular importance is given to placing these techniques within the broader context of Geographical research. Powerful, industry-standard statistical analysis software is used in the computer practical sessions. In addition to statistics, the module also introduces students to the presentation and analysis of data using Geographical Information Systems (GIS), giving an overview of this topic, illustrated with practical examples.

    Bwriad y modiwl hon yw i gyflwyno myfyrwyr i hanes ac athroniaeth daearyddiaeth ffisegol, a'r wahanol ffyrdd o ymdrin a'r ddisgyblaeth. Yn ogystal a chyfleu syniad o'r prif ymatebion hyn a'u hysblygiad, roddwyd pwyslais hefyd ar eu pwysigrwydd yn nhermau ymarferion ymchwil, gan dynnu sylw yn arbennig i esiamplau cyfoes o wyddoniaeth 'da' a 'drwg'. Bydd myfyrwyr yn archwilio datblygiad y wahanol ffurdd o ymdrin a daearyddiaeth ffisegol a beth yw goblygiadau hyn i ymchwil trwy astudio testunau allweddol yn hanes y disgyblaeth. Mae'r cysylltiad rhwng yr ymatebion ymchwil damcaniaethol ac ymarferol a fydd hefyd yn cael ei amlygu drwy creu: portffolio grp;adolygiad llenyddiaeth unigol.Yn ogystal, mae 5 darlithoedd ar gyflogadwyedd. This module aims to introduce students to the history and philosophical approaches of Physical Geography and the range of alternative approaches characterizing the discipline. In addition to conveying the main approaches and their evolution, their implication in terms of research practice are given particular emphasis, including recent examples of `good¿ and `poor¿ science. The way in which alternative approaches to Physical Geography have developed and what this entails for research is explored partly through student-centred investigation of key topics in the history of the discipline. The link between conceptual approaches and research practice is also highlighted in the development of a `mock¿ and a `real¿ research proposal, the latter covering the topic to be pursued as the future dissertation project. The module also includes 5 careers lectures which explore the career opportunities for Geography graduates and ways of further enhancing your employability.

    Mae'r traethawd estynedig yn adroddiad 10,000 o eiriau (mwyafswm) ar brosiect ymchwil gwreiddiol, sylweddol ac annibynol ar agwedd o Ddaearyddiaeth. Mae fel arfer yn seiliedig ar o amgylch 20-25 diwrnod o waith ymchwil sylfaenol (primary research) a sawl wythnos o waith analeiddio ac ysgrifennu. Mae'r traethawd estynedig yn cynnig y cyfle i chi i ddilyn eich diddordebau personol ac i arddangos eich galluoedd fel Daearyddwr.     Mae'r modiwl yma yn cynnig strwythur, trwy gefnogaeth grwp-cyfoedion dan arweiniad myfyrwyr a goruchwylio gan staff academaidd, i fyfyrwyr sy'n dilyn y modiwl 30 credid 'Traethawd Estynedig Daearyddiaeth'. Caiff y broses cefnogaeth a goruchwylio yma ei hasesu trwy gyflwyniad poster PowerPoint yn ystod CD1, a chyflwyniad log beirniadol personol yn CD2 sy'n seiliedig ar y 5 cyfarfod grwp-cyfoedion a'r 4 cyfarfod gr¿p dan arweiniad tiwtor academaidd (ynghyd a chofnod presenoldeb yn y cyfarfodydd). (This module provides structured, student-led peer-group support and academic staff group supervision for students undertaking the 30-credit 'Dissertation Report: Geography' module. This support and supervision is assessed through the submission of a PowerPoint Poster in TB1 and the submission in TB2 of an individually composed, critical and reflective log of the 5 dissertation peer-group meetings and the 4 group supervisory meetings (with a verified record of attendance at meetings). Working within a supervised Student Peer Group, you will also have the opportunity to provide constructive criticism to fellow students undertaking related research projects, learning from their research problems and subsequent solutions. This module complements the 'Dissertation Report: Geography' module, which is a co-requisite.)

This module provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their competence as a Geographer by undertaking a critical analysis of a wide variety of literature-based sources in order to develop a cogent, substantial, and persuasive argument. While the Dissertation in Geography normally focuses on the design and execution of an evidenced-based research project that assesses the capacity of students to undertake effective data analysis and interpretation, the purpose of this module is to assess the extent to which students are capable of engaging with the academic literature at the frontier of a particular part of Geography. Students select from a wide range of research frontiers in Human and Physical Geography that have been identified by the academic staff within the Department. Given that this module emphasizes student-centred learning, none of the frontiers will have been covered in other modules, although in many cases modules will have taken students up to some of these frontiers. However, to orientate students and provide them with suitable points of departure and way-stations, there will be a brief introduction to each frontier and a short list of pivotal references disseminated via Blackboard. (Note: The topic selected by you must not overlap with the subject of your Dissertation. If there is any doubt about potential overlap, this must be discussed with your Dissertation Support Group supervisor and agreed in writing.)

  • GEG110 First Year - Dale Field Trip

    Dale Field course The Dale Field course is a weekend residential field trip for Year 1 Geography students. The aim of the course is to undertake human and physical geography field work in conjunction with the Field Studies Centre in Dale Village, Pembrokeshire. Although field work will be undertaken, the module is un-credited, as the main aim of the trip is to allow the students a safe space to meet and engage with fellow students. This module is has been developed as a response to feedback (University, and NSS) that suggested students needed a way of meeting and socialising before their Year 2 international field trips.

  • GEG264A Environmental Research Methods A

    The module covers research project design, data collection and some aspects of data analysis. Students are introduced to a range of laboratory and field techniques in physical geography. They gain experience in describing and interpreting results derived from laboratory techniques concerned with reconstructing the depositional history of sediments, chemical analysis of water and sediment from a variety of sources and the simulation of geomorphological processes.
