To help us celebrate our 100th birthday, we are inviting children to take part in a very special competition. We would love you to help us imagine what our University will look like in another 100 years’ time, in the year 2120.
To do this, we are inviting you to send a picture, story, poem or video based on the idea of ‘The University of the Future’.
We have designed activities relevant to different Key Stages, so whatever your age, there are fun ways for you to get involved in designing your ‘University of the Future’ (please see section 1.1 to 1.3)
The winning entries will be premiered as part of a programme of events to mark the University’s centenary in 2020.
You are welcome to submit stories in English or Welsh.
Permission from a parent or legal guardian will be required before entries can be accepted.
1. Competition Categories:
1.1. Key Stage 1: draw or paint us a picture of the University you think our students could be studying at in 100 years time.
1.1.1. Students must be Key Stage 1
1.1.2. Pictures can be created from any arts and crafts materials
1.1.3. All those who enter will be judged for their creativity, use of materials and picture quality (relative to the age of the entrant), and their application of the story's theme ‘The University of the Future’.
1.2. Key Stage 2: we would love you to create a short story or a poem describing your idea for the University of the Future.
1.2.1. Students must be Key Stage 2
1.2.2. Word limit for all entries is 100 words, excluding the title. There is no minimum length
1.2.3. Entries are welcome in English or Welsh
1.2.4. There are no specific formatting requirements – font type, font size, line spacing etc.
1.2.5. All those who enter will be judged for their use of language, including accuracy of spelling and grammar (relative to the age of the entrant), the strength of the story's narrative and their application of the story's theme ‘The University of the Future’.
1.3. Key Stage 3: send us a video of your discussions with your family about what the university could look like in 100 years’ time, or you could create an animation or model on your computer and narrate it for us.
1.3.1. Students must be Key Stage 3 or 4
1.3.2. Videos should be no more than 3 minutes in length
1.3.3. Entries are welcome in English or Welsh
1.3.4. All those who enter will be judged for their use of language (relative to the age of the entrant), the creativity of ideas and their application of the story's theme ‘The University of the Future’.
2. How to enter
2.1. The competition will run from 13th July 2020 to 20th November 2020
2.2. Swansea University must receive all entries before the 20th November 2020, any entries after this date will not be judged.
2.3. Entries are free and must be made by completing our simple online entry form.
2.4. Entries are limited to two per individual.
2.5. A judging panel will consist of a selected group of University staff who will select the winner & award the highly commended status.
2.6. The University will not accept responsibility for competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed, regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of any equipment/internet failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind.
3. Prizes
3.1. Main prize
3.1.1. Key Stage 1: The winning entry will be turned into an animation that will feature in an animated video, created from the winning Key Stage 2 story, narrated by a well-known personality. The video will be premiered as part of a programme of events to mark the University’s centenary, and may include other Swansea University events. This film will be played across the University’s social media channels along with the Swansea University website.
3.1.2. Key Stage 2: The winning entry will be turned into an animated film narrated by a well-known personality to be premiered as part of a programme of events to mark the University’s centenary. This film will be played across the University’s social media channels along with the Swansea University website.
3.1.3. Key Stage 3: The winning entry will be introduced by a well-known personality to be premiered as part of a programme of events to mark the University’s centenary. This film will be played across the University’s social media channels along with the Swansea University website.
3.2. Highly Commended
3.2.1. Highly commended entries will be uploaded onto Swansea University’s Centenary webpages for up to five years. The webpages could be removed earlier if the University decides.
4. Winner Announcement
4.1. The winners and highly commended entries from each categories will be notified no later than 12 December 2020 and given further instructions on where to view their work.
4.2. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into concerning their decision.
5. Limitation of Liability
5.1. Insofar as is permitted by law, the University and the judges will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winners or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prizes except where it is caused by the negligence of the University and the judges. Your statutory rights are not affected.
6. Ownership of Entries and Intellectual Property Rights
6.1. As the creator, you will retain copyright for your entry. All winners and highly commended entrants agree to grant the University a non-exclusive, worldwide licence for five years from the Announcement Date to use your entry in whole or in part as described in 6.2-6.4.
6.2. You agree that the University can publish your entry in any of its digital communications (eg website, social media, email) or on any of its printed communications (eg an event flyer) for five years from the Announcement Date. The University will credit you as the creator anytime the University uses your work. The University will not seek to publish your work in any third party’s media (eg magazine, newspaper or media website) without your consent, other than as outlined in 6.3-6.4.
6.3. You agree that a winning entry may be used by the University and an external animation production company as described in 3.1. The University and the production company may use the animation freely across their websites and social media channel to promote this initiative, for a period of five years.
6.4. The winners and highly commended authors will receive reasonable requests from the University to take part in promotion to publicise the competition.
6.5. By submitting the story you agree and warrant that nothing in your submission breaches any privacy, copyright or intellectual property right in another’s work.
6.6. You agree that if it is determined that if any part of your submission is in breach of 6.5, your entry will not be eligible to receive a prize.
7. Data Protection
7.1. The University will only process your personal information as set out in the University’s privacy policy found here.
8. General
8.1. If the University believes that you have breached any of these terms and conditions, the University may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you from participating in the competition.
8.2. The judges will be unable to give feedback on your entry.
8.3. The terms and conditions may be amended by the University at any time.
8.4. These terms and conditions shall be governed by English and Welsh law, and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
