Tata Steel and Engineering building

Working in Partnership

Swansea University was founded to meet the needs of the metal industries. Today, its work on steel and collaboration with industry is more important than ever.

And with the University’s Bay campus located within sight of the Port Talbot steelworks one of Swansea University's strongest and most enduring partnerships is with Tata Steel.

By working in partnership, Swansea University and Tata Steel have developed the UKs first regional centre of excellence for steel innovation creating a high-tech research cluster that links the local supply chain in new research projects, commercial opportunities, funded projects, training and further cooperation and collaborations.

TATA Steel

Together we are working to:

  • reduce carbon emissions, taking carbon dioxide and using it to make high value products to drive a stronger and greener economy;
  • develop new generation coatings and steel claddings for buildings which will harness, store and release solar energy - a project which has won several high profile awards within the construction industry;
  • provide 40 Engineering doctorates, upskilling Tata's workforce and providing placements for our students.
