From Foundation to First Class Honours
Choosing to study a BSc in Biology in Swansea was one of the best decisions I’ve made! As a mature student having spent a few years out of education, the foundation programme was invaluable. The foundation year modules gave me a strong base to propel me through the rest of my degree with the diversity of topics providing a fascinating insight into the subject, from the molecular to whole ecosystems.
The support I received from every one of the teaching staff was amazing, their passion and dedication are inspiring. They supported me throughout my studies to achieve the best grades I was capable of. The great choice of modules has helped me to develop a keen passion for research as well as many transferrable skills I can use in the future.
I quickly developed a passion for laboratory techniques, molecular biology and the immune system. I conducted my final year dissertation project over the summer break, investigating the relationship between the microbiome and expression of immune-related genes in Atlantic salmon. Through my time in Swansea, I achieved the highest marks in the foundation, first and second years. During my final year, I received an award from the Royal Society of Biology for the highest achieving student. I also received the Pacific Trading Aquaculture Prize for the best practical report, researching the use of lumpfish in sea-lice control in aquaculture. I am proud to have achieved a BSc Biology with First Class Honours.
The Biology degree with foundation year allowed me to peruse my dreams and I am currently about to begin a PhD in the Swansea College of Medicine to research the mechanisms of mammalian egg resistance.
