What degree are you currently studying?
Master of Public Service and Administration from the Bush School of Government at Texas A&M University.
Why did you choose to come to Swansea?
This was my first study abroad experience, and I loved the fact that it encompassed both school learning and an internship. The location is also completely unique – I hadn’t heard of Swansea before, so I was really intrigued by it. I was also excited about making the most of travel opportunities in Europe. Whilst I have been here I’ve visited Paris, London and Brighton. I’ve also been all over Wales. It’s been really great – I’ve had time for work as well as fun!
Did your studies at Swansea University prepare you for your internship?
During the first part of my studies at Swansea University we studied a range of topics of British Politics and Governance. This module definitely prepared me to go into my internship, as I learned about the different forms of Government. It went into detail about what an MP does, and when I then went on to work with an MP in my internship I was very happy being prepared and knowing what they do in the constituency office and in London.
What have you done as a part of your internship programme?
I worked with the office of Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi. My role involved researching, devising policy briefs, attending events and sitting in parliamentary sessions on debates. It was a really immersive experience.
What was your favourite part of your internship programme?
Definitely working with Tonia Antoniazzi and her head research assistant. They were brilliant, friendly people who made my internship fun as well as interesting and informative.
What has been your favourite part of studying here at Swansea?
My favourite part of the location has definitely been being able to explore the Gower coastline. I run a lot in my spare time, and this is a gorgeous setting for a run. I have also enjoyed visiting the beaches. Three Cliffs Bay was another one of my favourite places whilst studying here.
Would you recommend others to come to Swansea? Why?
I would definitely recommend anyone with the opportunity to come to Swansea. The professors are excellent, and the education and learning experience here has been all-encompassing and excellent. The lecturers and professors are excellent; they lecture one-on-one and encourage more of a conversational type of lecture. I learnt a lot from each teaching session.
Also, exploring this part of the world is really interesting. South Wales and the Gower are very untouched and natural, and there is not a huge amount of tourism. Not many people know it’s here!
What’s been the most rewarding part of studying in Swansea?
All parts! The internship was incredible. I enjoyed going to my internship every day. Everyone was very accommodating, including the MP and staff, and I felt very welcome in the Houses of Parliament.
What would your advice be to students considering studying in Swansea?
Definitely budget correctly. Swansea is a very affordable city, and it’s similar to Texas in that respect. But it is quite easy to overspend on activities! To other Bush students I would say be prepared for lengthier assignments. Back at home we don’t write as much. The reading is similar – but be prepared to write essays and be fairly graded and receive in-depth feedback.
