Q. What is COAH?

COAH is the abbreviated form of the 'College of Arts & Humanities'.

COAH is one of the 7 colleges within Swansea University and is made up of the following departments: Cymraeg/Welsh, Education and Early Childhood Studies, DACE, English Language TESOL and Applied Linguistics, English Literature & Creative Writing, History and Medieval Studies, Classics Ancient History and Egyptology, Modern Languages Translation and Interpreting, Media, Communication and Public Relations, Political & Cultural Studies.

Q. Where can I go if I need any help?

You can contact the College Information Office, which is open 8:30 - 5:00 Monday to Friday. It can be found in the foyer of the Keir Hardie building. The College Information Office staff may not be able to answer every query you have but they will signpost you to those who can help.

All UG and PG taught students are allocated an Academic Mentor. Please look at your Intranet account to see who your Academic Mentor is. Contact the College Information Office if you need any help. 

Q. What do 'TB' and 'Semester' mean?

Your academic year consists of 2 parts. Each part is called a Teaching Block (abbreviated to TB) or Semester. Where you see TB1 it means Semester 1 and vice versa. Where you see TB2 it means Semester 2 and vice versa.

Q. What’s the difference between a lecture and seminar?

A lecture is a talk on a specific academic topic given by a lecturer, whereas a seminar is a group discussion on a specific topic related to a lecture. A seminar is held between students and a seminar tutor who might or might not also have been the person who gave the lecture on the subject.

Q. What are 'KH' and 'JC'?

KH (Keir Hardie) and JC (James Callaghan) are the abbreviated names of the main buildings used by the College of Arts & Humanities. Other buildings around campus are likely to be abbreviated also. If you don't understand where you need to be please look at the campus map which is available electronically on the website or in hard copy from the College Information Office.

Q. Do I have to do any reading before my course?

Each module you study will have its own reading list. 

Q. How do I find out about COAH information when I get to University?

There are a number of ways of receiving official information:

You will have a student e-mail address. It is very important that you check this e-mail account regularly.

The University has an e-learning system called BlackBoard. You can access lecture notes and module information via Blackboard. You will learn about how to access BlackBoard when you start University. COAH information will be placed under the 'College of Arts & Humanities' folder. If you are a Joint Honours student and your home department isn't within the College of Arts and Humanities please contact the College Office and ask to be given access to the folder.

Q.  When does teaching take place?

Teaching takes place Monday to Friday 9.00am - 6.00pm but will vary according to which modules you take, so please make careful note of your timetabled classes.

Q. How do I access my timetable?

Timetables for each module you will be studying are available via the Intranet. To access them, follow the instructions below.

Log into your account at: Once you have logged into your account you will see a bar on the left of the screen. A tab labelled Student services will have a link under it called Links to Services. Click on this and it will change the window on the right of the bar. In this window you will need to click on’ Module Timetables’, select your module and then select the semester the module runs in from the ‘Select Week(s) to View’ drop down box. Once this is done, click on ‘View Timetable’ and your timetable for that module will load.

Timetables are subject to change so you should regularly check the version online. You should also check your e-mail account daily for notices of teaching changes or cancellations.

Q. What is Freshers' Week / Welcome Week?

Freshers' Week / Welcome Week is an introductory week and is a time for academic preparation and acclimatisation. No formal teaching takes place during Freshers' Week / Welcome Week, and you will have time to:

  • Complete key administrative tasks

  • Attend various welcome and induction events

  • Take part in a variety of social events

  • Visit the Freshers' Fair organised by the Students’ Union and join student clubs and societies

  • Start finding your way round the campus and the main buildings you will be using.

Q. Are all the events during Freshers' Week / Welcome Week compulsory?

University is not just about academic study, important as that is – you are strongly encouraged to take full advantage of the enormous range of recreational opportunities, and student clubs and societies, which are available to you as a member of the Swansea University Students Union.

Q. When does teaching start?

Teaching starts on Monday 30th September, and we hope that by the end of Fresher's Week / Welcome Week you will be well prepared and ready to embark on your studies.
