Our Global Activity

2015 has been an extremely busy year for DARO on the international front, with formal Alumni Chapters having been established in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Malaysia. The inauguration events were all hugely successful, with large numbers of alumni joining representatives from the University to network and discuss ideas for their Chapters. Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Iwan Davies attended all of the events, updating alumni on the success of REF 2014, the opening of the Bay Campus and the cutting-edge research being delivered by the Colleges.

OmanThe Chapters have been established to give Swansea’s international graduates a platform for social and professional networking with like-minded individuals. They will provide a sense of community in their respective locations and help the University to keep in touch with alumni, recognise professional excellence and ensure that former students are able to contribute to the institution’s future. They will also provide a local network which new graduates can access as soon as they return home from their time in Swansea.

A Head of Chapter has been appointed in each location on a voluntary basis. These individuals will assist DARO in managing alumni groups in their own regions, and act as a direct point of contact between Chapter and University. They will organise gatherings and feed back to DARO, providing details and photographs of Chapter activities, as well as helping DARO to identify Swansea graduates who have been particularly successful in their fields. We are extremely grateful to all of our Heads of Chapter for accepting the role; and we look forward immensely to working with them over the coming months and years.

International 1Our international alumni have an incredibly important part to play in shaping the future of the University, and with our 2020 centenary celebrations firmly on the horizon we are determined to engage with as many of our former students as possible. As well as keeping in touch and sharing stories with us, we need our alumni to act as ambassadors so that we can increase the number of overseas students coming to study at Swansea. We want to identify and develop collaborative projects with international organisations, both within academia and industry; and we want to generate extra funding that will provide more international student scholarships. These goals can all be achieved with the support of our fantastic and committed Alumni Chapters.

The University is extremely proud of its international alumni. While visiting the Chapters, we heard so many stories about the diverse and impressive careers of our graduates, and how information learned at Swansea is having a profound impact on technology and industry throughout the world. We are very much looking forward to building on the early success of the Chapters and engaging further with our vibrant international community.
