Studying Through the Medium of Welsh

Studying Through the Medium of Welsh

The University actively encourages Welsh-speaking students and those who are learning Welsh as a second language, to study part of their degree course through the medium of Welsh.

Through Academi Hywel Teifi (located in the Talbot Building) information and support is offered to all students about the academic opportunities which are available to them in Welsh. Academi Hywel Teifi is also home to the Swansea University Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. The University is working closely with the Coleg to ensure that Welsh-medium study opportunities continue to develop and increase. Currently, a limited number of financial incentives are offered by Academi Hywel Teifi, and further incentives through the Coleg, to those who study a minimum of 40 credits through the medium of Welsh, depending upon availability of Welsh-medium modules within the department. Students are encouraged to become members of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol in order to gain full access to the opportunities and resources provided. For more information, please email: abertawe@colegcymraeg.ac.uk.

The University has also developed a Welsh-medium teaching strategy which aims to offer Welsh-speaking students opportunities to study part of their degree programme through the medium of Welsh in a wide range of disciplines including Modern Languages, Media, Law, Geography, Bioscience, Mathematics, Engineering and Nursing. This will foster bilingual skills and better prepare students for employment in Wales.

Furthermore, to enhance students’ employability, Academi Hywel Teifi has developed a Welsh-medium work placement module which is open to Level 5 students no matter what their degree programme. This enables students to follow a work placement appropriate to their degree programme through the medium of Welsh.

Further information about studying through the medium of Welsh may be obtained by emailing: astudio@abertawe.ac.uk, by calling Academi Hywel Teifi on 01792 602070, or by visiting the Academi’s pages on the Swansea University website.
