Feedback - Enhancing the Student Experience

Student Module and Programme Feedback

The University constantly reviews the structure of its programmes, the content of its modules and the application of its rules and regulations. It does this to improve the provision it offers to students. Comments of the external examiners, which are received on an annual basis, are the main focus of such reviews but as important are the views of students.

You are invited to comment on your academic experiences at Swansea in a variety of ways. For instance, you will be invited to complete a Student Module Feedback questionnaire for each module you take. All lecturers will receive a module feedback report detailing the results of their module feedback. These reports will be used to improve teaching, learning and assessment by identifying areas of good practice and highlighting areas requiring improvement. The results of these questionnaires are also fed into the annual programme reviews conducted by each College. Colleges will be required to share the results of Student Module Feedback and their response with students in an appropriate form, preserving the anonymity of staff and students where necessary.

In addition, each College and/or each subject area within the College is required to establish a staff-student committee, at which the views and concerns of students are heard in a more formal setting. The comments of students are voiced by College Student Representatives, who are appointed by University and Students' Union staff, and Subject Student Representatives who are elected by their peers on an annual basis. The student representatives, in turn, meet on a regular basis with representatives from other Colleges, in a forum co-ordinated by the Students’ Union. Key University officers are regularly invited to these meetings to discuss openly with the student representatives any concerns, and can update students on key developments within the University.

A selection of student representatives serve on key University committees and are again invited to raise issues on behalf of the relevant students. If you are interested in serving as a student representative, you are advised to contact your College administration in the first instance, or alternatively the Education Full-time Officer of the Students’ Union.

The University also participates in the annual National Student Survey run by IPSOS-MORI which is open to full-time final year undergraduate students. Each year the results are considered by Swansea University, in partnership with the Students’ Union, and by Academic Colleges and subject areas. Many changes are then made in response to this feedback to benefit current and future students. For more information, go to http://www.thestudentsurvey.com/.  The University also conducts an annual survey (the Student Experience Survey) for non-final year undergraduate students. Similarly, there are national surveys for postgraduate students; the Higher Education Academy’s Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) for students pursuing Taught Postgraduate programmes and the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) for students pursuing Postgraduate Research programmes. These provide a further opportunity for student evaluation and ensure that students have the opportunity to comment on their academic experiences at all levels of study.

The opportunity to offer feedback to the University is not restricted to your period as a student. The University would be particularly interested in your comments on whether the curriculum was relevant to your employment. Comments on ways to improve the curriculum to make Swansea graduates more employable would be welcomed and would benefit other students.
