the need to swim

Again, one of the students knew the swimmer who is the focus of this film. He swims everyday in Langland Bay, near Swansea, to the benefit of his arthritis. This film appears very simple, but was very carefully thought out and structured to show the swim as being a special ritual, in which the swimmer is separated from daily life and undergoes a transformation. Here we see him changing his dry land watch for a waterproof one, as he embarks on his special journey. The transformational effect as he enters the water against the light was a deliberate choice, not an accident! This clip is a very good example of a developing shot which follows the action and which, at three minutes, is nearly one third of the entire film.
