What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.
Campus Catering and the Students Union each introduced Fairtrade products into their outlets several years ago. Initially these tended to be specialist products for those who wanted them. Now however they have become the main choice for products such as fruit juices.
Swansea University was the first in Wales to achieve Fairtrade status. The University's Campus Catering division has a strong commitment to sustainability and has recently published a Sustainability Policy Statement (pdf). Further information is also available on the Campus Catering wesbite.
Within the University, a Fairtrade Steering Group has been set up. For further information, or to get involved with the Steering Group, please contact Les Carmichael, Catering Manager.
