Why University?

The reasons...

Every year around 500,000 students begin a course at university in the UK. There are lots of reasons for going to university. Firstly, it can help you get a better job and earn more money. Secondly, it will give you the chance to become more independent and meet new people; and thirdly – and just as importantly -you get the opportunity to learn, study, develop your knowledge and also have fun!

Having a degree - the qualification that you will get at the end of most university courses - makes you much more attractive to employers, meaning you will have a greater choice of jobs and are likely to be paid more.

Studying for a degree will also give you the chance to learn valuable skills such as communication, presentation and teamwork, which are vital when it comes to your chosen job or career.

Depending on what you choose to study, a university graduate (someone who has completed their university course) could earn up to £400,000 more during their working life than someone who didn’t go to university. Some jobs – such as teachers or doctors – are only open to graduates, so you might find that you need to have a degree to start the career you want.

But, university is more than just a place to prepare you for good jobs. It is a great place to gain your independence and get the opportunity to live away from home, to make new friends and meet people from all sorts of backgrounds and from all over the world. At Swansea, we have over 15,000 students.

Whatever your interests, you will be able to enjoy them at university, thanks to the huge range of clubs and societies that are available. You may even be tempted to take up a new sport or hobby!

Universities are the best places in the world to learn. You will be taught by real experts in their subjects, within superb facilities and often in a very different way to what you may be used to at school or college. A lot of people find that they enjoy studying independently at university and become more enthusiastic about their course/s.

Whatever and wherever you choose to study, going to university can be a life changing event, so it is vital that you make the right decisions for you.
