Disclosure

It is not always easy to let other people know about your disability or medical condition. You are not obliged to disclose information about your disability or medical condition; it is your decision whether to share this information

You can disclose a disability at any time during your studies, however, we strongly urge you to disclose your disability or specific learning difficulty at the earliest opportunity. This will enable University staff to provide help and support appropriate to your individual needs. At whatever point you decide to disclose a disability or medical condition the Disability Office will be on hand to offer support, advice and guidance.

If you decide to tell the Disability Office that you have a disability or medical condition, then we can help to provide the support that you may need while you are a student. Here are some things that we can do which may help you to decide whether to tell us about your situation:

  • We can advise you about funding you may be entitled to which may cover additional costs that you may incur due to your disability or medical condition
  • We can liaise with your academic department and other support services to ensure that you have the support that you need – for example, we can arrange for you to have extra time in exams
  • We can arrange to have some books and other materials produced in an alternative format that is best suited for you, for example larger print or digital format
  • We can arrange concessions in the library which may mean that you are able to use the resources more flexibly
  • We can talk to lecturers (with your permission) to help them understand more fully any difficulties you face
