The one year, full-time Higher Education Certificate in Maternity Care offers 120 Credits at Level 4, and is delivered via a blended learning approach. It is a dynamic course aimed at anyone who has an interest in reproduction, birth, parenting and maternity care.
The Midwifery and Reproductive Health team have extensive expertise in maternity care with a strong focus on empowering women and families throughout the pregnancy, birth and the early parenting process. Many of the team are research active and all are driven to try to improve knowledge and understanding of women’s bodies, experiences and needs during the transition to motherhood.
All students on the programme study four core modules in maternity care, looking at all aspects from a holistic perspective. Students focus on self-development, self-awareness, and holistic skills whilst developing a detailed knowledge and understanding of key aspects of physiology, family, society, communication, culture, holism, health and maternity care services in the UK.
Students choose from two specialist routes: the Doula Route and the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) route.
The Doula Route enables self-employed Doulas, or those planning a career as a Doula, to develop further their self-awareness, support and holistic skills to be positive, proactive pregnancy, birth and parenting companions. Visiting lecturers include Doulas and complementary therapists, who bring added specialist expertise. The route also addresses key aspects of self employment, including business planning, financial planning and records, tax issues, and marketing.
The MSW route enables those already employed as Maternity Support Workers, those wishing to gain such a role, and Nursery Nurses working in Maternity Care, to develop a deeper insight into care of women and families within the NHS, both in hospital and in the community. All students on this route cover key clinical skills development in simulation. For those MSWs who are in employment, or those who secure voluntary work within the maternity care setting, there is the option to achieve clinical competencies based on the All Wales Curriculum for Maternity Support Workers.
We have been awarded Level 1 Baby Friendly Initiative status, from UNICEF UK, and promote breastfeeding through a multi-dimensional approach.
This programme both innovative and unique, and builds self-confidence, knowledge and skills in one of the most important dimensions of human life: pregnancy, birth and parenting.
