Course Overview

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: ABB – BBB at A-level. For applicants offering at least one of the following subjects at A level: Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics, the typical offer will be BBB. GCSE profiles need to include a minimum of 5 passes at Grade A*-C, including Welsh/English Language and Maths.

EMPLOYABILITY: 91% of Swansea University Psychology students go on to work and/or study six months after graduating (Unistats, 2016).

AVERAGE EARNINGS: Typical salaries for qualified primary and secondary school teachers are in the region of £22,467-£33,160, depending on experience. Within leadership and managerial roles in education, salaries can significantly exceed this. As a headteacher you could earn as much as £108,282 (DofE). With experience, qualified psychologists could earn between £47,088 and £81,000 or higher.

Description

Education is a forward-looking, research-led discipline concerned with policy and practice from a global perspective. It is a rapidly growing area of study that draws on the disciplines of psychology, philosophy, history and the social sciences to focus on understanding how people learn and how structures of education operate to foster life-long learning and personal development.

The Education and Psychology joint honours degree will enable students to specialise in both subjects, developing a range and mix of skills and knowledge which will enhance their future career prospects.

Designed for UK/EU and international students, our BSc (Hons) Education and Psychology course considers:

  • Education in a wide context, not just within formal primary and secondary school settings, but also Further/Higher Education, social services, local and national government, and education within the community. 
  • The psychological and neuroscientific processes that underpin daily activities, such as thinking, reasoning, memory and language. Students will explore human development across the lifespan, evaluate individual differences in the context of intelligence, personality and education, examine ways to improve health-related behaviour, learn the consequences of brain injury, examine how psychological perspectives can inform educational practice and theory, and explore cutting-edge research in learning and neuroscience. In each year of study, emphasis is placed on using psychological theory and research to understand and address societal issues and real-world problems.

Consequently, with the development of specialist subject knowledge and a unique set of skills, graduates of our BSc (Hons) Education and Psychology programme will be well equipped to challenge contemporary issues at the intersection of psychology and education, including prison education, the education of looked after children, education across the lifespan, special educational needs, and community education.

Research Focused:

  • The programme’s strong emphasis on research skills will develop students as effective researchers within Education and Psychology, allowing them to build synergies between the disciplines.
  • Module content is informed by staff research and current policy and practice, ensuring that the syllabus remains up to date and reflects contemporary research and developments within the fields of Education and Psychology.
  • Students will develop the research skills needed to critically evaluate current education practice and policy, and in turn, inform future policy development in a rapidly changing political and social environment.
  • Students will also learn to critically evaluate psychological theory and will develop the skills needed to design and conduct cutting-edge psychology research to address contemporary issues in society and real-world problems.

Enhancing Employability: Employability and study skills are embedded throughout our BSc (Hons) Education and Psychology degree, with all students having the opportunity to undertake optional work placement modules in years two and three of the degree.

A degree in Education and Psychology provides excellent preparation for students wishing to undertake further training in primary, secondary or further education, and for entry to a wide-range of professional careers. In addition, with our unique emphasis on learning in a digital age, students will also be well equipped to utilise cutting edge learning technologies central to current trends in education theory and practice.

Entry Requirements

  • A-Levels/Welsh Baccalaureate*: ABB – BBB - For applicants offering at least one of the following subjects at A level: Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics, the typical offer will be BBB
  • Access Diploma: 24 Distinctions and 15 Merits
  • BTEC: DDM
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: 360-375 points
  • International Baccalaureate: 32-33 points

*We welcome applications from Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma students. Requirements are as for A-levels where you can substitute the same non-subject specific grade for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Level Core Grade.

Please note: it is not essential to have studied any particular subjects at A-level. We do not accept General Studies.

GCSE profiles need to include a minimum of 5 passes at Grade A*-C, including Welsh/English Language and Mathematics.

Please note: Students who wish to train to become teachers in Wales following graduation from this course will need GCSEs at grade B or above in English and Mathematics, and also a GCSE at grade B or above in Welsh if they wish to train through the medium of Welsh. They will also need a C grade or above in GCSE Science.

How To Apply

  • Applications for BSc (Hons) Education and Psychology must be made through UCAS.
  • Applications will be assessed holistically, taking into account the balance, nature and strength of A-level, AS and GCSE subjects (or equivalent), the personal statement, relevant skills and experience, past achievements, and referee’s comments.
  • The personal statement is crucial and must demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the subject.
  • There is no interview process. Once an offer is made, this will be uploaded on to UCAS track and applicants will be invited to either accept or decline.

Please note: All offers will be conditional, subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check. At the start of years two and three, students will also be required to sign an annual declaration confirming that there have been no changes to their DBS status. Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2018/19 are as follows:

Additional Costs

Course Structure

This is a modular undergraduate honours degree programme offering 360 credits over three years. Students will take half of their credits in Education, and the other half in Psychology. Students will take eight compulsory modules in year one. In year two students will undertake four compulsory modules and select two optional education modules. In the final year, students will take three compulsory modules, and select five optional modules (two from psychology, three from education). 

Students benefit from a varied and well supported programme of study including lectures, seminars, academic tutorials, practical research classes, debates, collaborative group work, field visits to schools and other educational settings, and online, digital learning.  Independent study and self-directed learning is an integral component of each module.

Staff offer opportunities for one-to-one support on academic matters and students are assigned a personal tutor from each academic department to provide personal, academic, and professional support.

Assessment: Students will be assessed through a combination of unseen examinations (multiple choice, short- and long-questions) and coursework, including: essays, presentations (poster and oral), written reports, blogs, personalised learning records, case formulations, research proposals, video blogs, and research reports. Students are also required to complete an independent research project in the final year linking Education and Psychology. These multiple forms of assessment will be used to meet the diverse learning styles and previous educational experiences of students.

Please note that students choosing to study towards the Cambridge English Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) will also have to undertake an examination as part of the qualification.

Careers

Psychology graduates tend to be highly numerate and possess high-quality essay writing and critical analysis skills, team working and problem-solving skills, good ICT abilities, independent research and excellent oral communication skills. With these transferable and valuable attributes, graduates will have much to offer to a variety of employers.

The BSc (Hons) Education and Psychology degree provides an excellent foundation for many types of professional careers, including:

  • early years teaching and play therapy
  • education administration
  • community development work, counselling, and roles within youth, health and social care
  • jobs in education departments in museums, galleries and theatres, local and national government and in social services
  • HR and management positions
  • public relations, marketing and publishing careers
  • careers services
  • roles in the criminal justice system (i.e., the police, prison education)

Students may wish to undertake further training and study to pursue a professional career in Psychology (e.g., Clinical, Forensic, Educational, and Occupational). An NHS trainee clinical psychologist starting at Band 6 earns £25,783. With experience, qualified psychologists could earn between £47,088 and £81,000 or higher. Salaries in private practice vary.

This degree is also excellent preparation for students wishing to undertake further training in primary, secondary or further education, or undertake a Master’s course or PhD in Psychology, Education, or a related social science, to further enhance their professional skills, knowledge and experience.

With our programme of guest speakers from different education sectors and psychology backgrounds, students will be exposed to the range of careers available to graduates of the programme.

CMALT Scheme

Swansea University is working in partnership with the Association for Learning Technology (ALT) to provide an opportunity for education students to achieve recognition through the ALT Certified Membership scheme (CMALT). Swansea University is the first higher education institution to incorporate an accreditation route to CMALT on an undergraduate education programme. Certified Members of ALT include learning technology practitioners, teachers and researchers from across the educational and commercial sectors. CMALT is nationally recognised and increasingly valued by employers and professionals, and provides an excellent opportunity to gain recognition for learning technology skills and experience, develop transferable skills, which can be applied cross all educational sectors and industry, and increase the impact of your professional record or CV.

Employability

In connection with the Swansea Employability Academy (SEA) and University’s Career and Employability Service, students will be supported to undertake the SEA Bronze award in year one of their studies.

Students will also have the opportunity to undertake optional employability modules, which include work placements in organisations such as schools, local authorities, business and charities. On completion of these modules, students are awarded the Silver and Gold SEA Awards respectively. In addition, through our programme of field visits, and by completing the final year research based dissertation, students will also be supported to achieve the Platinum Level of the SEA Award. Completion of the SEA award will be recorded on students Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR). 

As part of the degree, all students will have the option of studying towards the Cambridge English Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), at a substantially reduced cost.  The CELTA is useful for those hoping to start a career in English language teaching abroad or in the UK and is recognised world-wide as basic training for employment in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching.
