Description

As a student on the MEng Civil Engineering course, you will be equipped to play an important role in society and be prepared to become involved in challenging engineering projects. There are both theoretical and practical elements to the course, to give you a challenging yet hands-on learning experience.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements of the MEng Civil Engineering course are:

AAB at A level (including Mathematics).

Other recommended subjects include:

AAB is our standard offer for students who are studying 3 A levels, but we recognise the individual nature of each application and so the standard offer should be viewed only as a guide. In some circumstances we may make different offers or points offers where appropriate.

IB at 34 (preferably to include good marks in Maths).

Students studying for BTEC qualifications require DDD - DDM plus B grade at A level Mathematics. Studying A level Mathematics alongside a BTEC qualification is our strongly recommended entry pathway for those studying BTEC qualifications. Students not studying A level Mathematics, alongside their BTEC qualification, require D*DD-DDD with D in ‘Mathematics for Technicians’ and D in ‘Further Mathematics for Technicians’, plus minimum GCSE grades of B in Mathematics and 2 x B grades in Science/Engineering/Manufacturing.

Students with industrial experience and qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have studied access or vocational qualifications, you are advised to apply for the Integrated Foundation Year.

If you are applying for Level Two (second year) entry, in order to be considered, you will need to have already covered the topics offered in Swansea at Level One (first year) in a certified qualification, with a high overall score.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2016/17 are as follows:

Tuition fees for years of study after your first year are subject to an increase of 3% for International students and at the capped fee rate as set by the UK Government for UK/EU students.

Additional Costs

The tuition fees do not cover costs incurred personally by the student such as the purchase of books or stationery, printing or photocopying costs.

Recommended textbooks for this course are available in the library. All software needed for the course is available on the Engineering network, for use within our PC rooms at Swansea University.

Free wireless internet access is available across the whole of the University campus and halls of residence.

Accreditation

The MEng Civil Engineering at Swansea University is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM).

The Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) is composed of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE).

This degree has been accredited by the JBM under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. 

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).  An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).  Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

What skills will I gain?

As a student on the Civil Engineering programme, you will gain the knowledge to:

  • Design and analysis civil engineering structures
  • Break a complex engineering problem down into its component parts, to sketch/model engineering solutions and to be able to understand and prepare technical reports
  • Build awareness of current Design Practices through the use of the latest Engineering Standards (e.g. Eurocodes)
  • Develop your own software with the final purpose of analysing realistic civil engineering problems
  • Be critical awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of different design approaches when facing a civil engineering problem, including aspects such as environmental constraints, economy or health and safety.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 ranks Engineering at Swansea as 10th in the UK for the combined score in research quality across the Engineering disciplines.

The Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering is one of the leading centres in the world for computational modelling research, with fundamental advancements in the field first being made over 40 years ago by Civil Engineers here at Swansea.

Computational engineering is the development and use of carefully-written computer codes to simulate the physics of a particular engineering phenomenon. This often involves very large-scale mathematics being solved using a supercomputer.

Computational engineering is now fundamental to manufacturing, the automotive and aerospace industries, design of civil engineering structures, such as bridges, dams and buildings, oil and gas pipelines, as well as the development of technology for new renewable energy sources, to name but a few.
