MEng Chemical Engineering

As a student on the Chemical Engineering course, you will be prepared to meet the needs of modern process engineering. Chemical engineers design, operate and optimise chemical and physical processes that turn raw materials into valuable products for human use. They also use their skills to dispose of the by-products generated by these processes in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

This professionally accredited degree will equip you with knowledge and skills across the full spectrum of chemical engineering topics, allowing you to keep your career options open. Modules build on established chemical engineering areas with application to energy, health, food, water and the environment.

Description

The objectives of the Chemical Engineering programme are:

  • To build engineering skills of critical importance when working in industry, including the ability to break a complex engineering problem into its component parts, to sketch/model engineering solutions, to work in a multidisciplinary team, to be able to understand and prepare technical reports and to be able to present your work in a clear and concise manner.
  • To provide students with a solid background in the design and analysis of chemical and other processes.
  • To build awareness of current design practices through the use of the latest engineering standards
  • To build critical awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of different design approaches when facing an engineering problem, including aspects such as environmental constraints, economy, ethics and health and safety.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the MEng Chemical Engineering (with a Year Abroad) course are:

AAA-AAB at A level (including Mathematics).

Variable offers made dependent on subjects studied and all applications are considered on an individual basis, with GCSE grades, AS Level subjects and grades, work experience, references and personal statement taken into account.

Or 34 at IB to include a 5 at HL or 6 at SL Mathematics and 4 at HL or 5 at SL English Language.

Students studying for BTEC qualifications require D*D*D* to include B at A Level Mathematics. Must be in relevant subject. If they are not taking A Level Mathematics, they must achieve a minimum D in ‘Mathematics for Technicians’ and D in ‘Further Mathematics for Technicians’ modules of the BTEC. Students are also required to have minimum two A grades at GCSE, to include a minimum grade B in Mathematics and two other Science subjects.

Students with industrial experience and qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have studied access or vocational qualifications, you are advised to apply for the Integrated Foundation Year.

If you are applying for Level Two (second year) entry, in order to be considered, you will need to have already covered the topics offered in Swansea at Level One (first year) in a certified qualification, with a high overall score.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2018/19 are as follows:

UK/EU International
MEng Full-time £9,000 £19,000

Fees for full time Undergraduate UK/EU students may be increased in subsequent years of study by an inflationary amount determined by Welsh Government.

Fees for full time Undergraduate International students will increase by 3% for each subsequent year of study.

Additional Costs

The tuition fees do not cover costs incurred personally by the student such as the purchase of books or stationery, printing or photocopying costs.

Students on this course will need to meet the costs of the item below:

  • Pair of safety boots for industrial site visits. £20 maximum cost.

Recommended textbooks for this course are available in the library. All software needed for the course is available on the Engineering network, for use within our PC rooms at Swansea University.

Free wireless internet access is available across the whole of the University campus and halls of residence.

Accreditation

The MEng Chemical Engineering at Swansea University is accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the educational requirement for Further Learning for Engineering Council registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Study on an accredited degree will provide you with some of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills needed as a Chartered Engineer. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

IChemE internationally accredited degree IChemE accreditation:

  • Assures you that the course will give you a solid professional grounding in the subject
  • Assures you the teaching will be of a high standard, relevant, with appropriate practical content and appropriate contact hours from fully qualified academic staff
  • Meets the needs of employers
  • Includes internationally accepted standard process safety and sustainability content
  • Provides a foundation for you to aim for the prized Chartered Engineer status

Year Abroad

Students on a 5-year MEng degree scheme which includes a year abroad will also be able to study at a partner university after their second or third year, and before their final year. 

As a student on a Year Abroad course, you will select the university where you will spend your year abroad by submitting three choices to the course coordinator at the College of Engineering.

This information is then forwarded to the International Development Office at Swansea University so that exchange places can be allocated across the University.  There is a combination of Engineering specific and University-wide links available. University-wide links are subject to availability and negotiation as they service the entire institution, in principle.

The year abroad has to be passed in order to progress. Our study abroad schemes are not credit bearing in the sense that they do not act as substitutes for study in Swansea; so a standard 4-year MEng becomes a 5-year MEng with a year abroad.
