School of Health Science
‘It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has’. (Hippocrates) This unique, interdisciplinary degree reflects the patient-centred approach central to contemporary medicine with its holistic, bio-psycho-social understanding of health and illness. The degree covers the spectrum of subjects of the science and art of medicine.
Part-time study:
Designed with Swansea University Medical School as our platform into graduate entry medicine, the course has a year-on-year track record of getting students into postgraduate Medicine both here at Swansea, in the rest of the UK (e.g. Manchester) in the EU, and Australia. Students also go into gradate entry para-medical professions (e.g. physiotherapy, health promotion). Other career options available to graduates are wide-ranging.
You’ll study Medicine and Healthcare as a body of technical, scientific knowledge, but also as knowledge made by/applied to human beings. We show you how to critically analyse the nature, goals, theory and practice of modern medicine and healthcare, and their important roles in today’s society. To develop broad and deep understandings of medicine and healthcare, we integrate perspectives from the Medical and Human Sciences, and the Humanities, including: anatomy and physiology, the methodology of evidence-based medicine, mathematics, sociology, public health and epidemiology, health law and practice, economics, medical ethics and philosophy, medical history, and literature.
