Biochemistry has been described as ‘the basis of modern medicine’, ‘molecular cell biology’, ‘the chemistry of the living cell’ or ‘chemical biology’. Biochemistry is all of these, and for anyone interested in the working and structure of cells at the molecular and sub-molecular levels, biochemistry has a powerful attraction.

Part-time study:

Each biochemistry degree scheme has its own special features and strengths but each provides a sound, balanced training in biochemistry and related analytical sciences.

Teaching in Biochemistry was rated ‘Excellent’ (the highest possible grading) in the national Teaching Quality Assessment.

Standard Entry requirements

Three A levels are normally needed, including Chemistry and at least one other science subject. Typical offers: 280-300 tariff points.

Assessment

Teaching is given through lectures and practical classes. Self-tuition packages are available in the School’s IT facility. Simulation software is available for undergraduates to gain the feel of techniques normally outside the range of experience at this level, for example radioimmunoassay. In addition to the supervision provided for your final year research project, you will benefit from tutorials, seminars and class discussion groups.
