BA Translation
Undergraduate Translation Degree Scheme at Swansea
The BA Translation is a four-year programme that allows you to study two languages in a Single Honours degree scheme. In the course of your studies, you will gain proficiency in these languages, acquire the technical skills you need as a translator, and lay the foundations for theoretical work with translation. The programme has been operational since 2002/03.
English as your first language
If your first language is English, you choose two source languages from which you translate (mainly) into English. The languages we offer are French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Welsh. You must have an A-level for one of these languages, but you can start the other language also as a beginner. Welsh is only offered for native speakers of that language.
English as a second language
The BA Translation is relatively popular among students from outside the UK. We have graduates from France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Greece, and Canada, and current students from a few other countries. The UK Council for International Student Affairs gives useful information for non-British students.
If your native language is one French, German, Italian, or Spanish, you can choose translation between your native language and English as one of your language pairs. In your second language pair, you will then translate between two non-native languages, so that your level of English should be very good.
For some other languages, it is also possible to offer them in the BA Translation if you are a native speaker. This is mainly the case for languages we offer in our MA programme. For details, please contact the department.Career perspectives
The BA Translation is a vocationally oriented programme with a strong academic background. It will prepare you both for a career as a translator and for further academic study in an MA. Two of our 2009 graduates founded Veritas Language Solutions immediately after their graduation.
