The Right Honourable Rhodri Morgan was born in Cardiff in September 1939, was educated in state schools in the Cardiff area & is a fluent Welsh speaker. He is a graduate of both Oxford & Harvard Universities.
In 1987, the Right Honourable Rhodri Morgan was elected to Parliament. He served as the Opposition Front Bench Spokesman on Energy from 1988 to 1992 and then Welsh Affairs 1992-1997. He became Chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee on Public Administration between 1997 to 1999. In 1999, he was elected as the Assembly Member for Cardiff West and became a member of the first-ever Cabinet of the new devolved system of Government in Wales as the Assembly Secretary for Economic Development and European Affairs. He was elected First Minister of Wales in February 2000 and served in that post until his retirement from that office in December 2009. He retired from all political office at the May 2011 elections.
The Right Honourable Rhodri Morgan was Chancellor of Swansea University Council from 2011 until his death in May 2017. He was also chair of the Swansea University Court and Lay Trustee of the Students’ Union.
