Phil Gough
Director of Finance
Phillip Gough took up his appointment as Director of Finance in September 1996. He previously held a similar position at the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff for eleven years.
He was educated at Weymouth Grammar School and the University of Bristol, and subsequently joined the County of Avon in Bristol where he qualified as a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. Phil has spent twenty four years in the Higher Education sector and is an active member of the British Universities Finance Directors Group (BUFDG), for whom he has chaired the South West and South Wales Region and the NHS Liaison Group. In 2003 he was appointed as a Director of the Universities Mutual Association Limited (UMAL) which arranges insurance cover for over 50 universities.
The Finance Department aims to provide a cost effective, efficient and professional financial service which includes advice, direction, guidance and support to all members of the University. The Department consists of approximately 40 members of staff and has an annual budget of £1.3 million.
As Director of Finance his responsibilities included maintaining effective systems of financial control, including the preparation of comprehensive financial policies and procedures, and securing efficient systems of income collection and payments. Phil also had line management of the Internal Audit function.
