I am programme Director for the MRes in Medicine and Life Sciences programme and Dissertation Tutor for Swansea University Medical School (SUMS) taught Masters students. I am a Senior Lecturer in Research Methods, Dissertation Tutor for PG taught Masters and Programme Director for the M.Res in Medicine and Life Sciences with Swansea University’s School of Medicine. I am also an experienced child health and life sciences research scientist, both as a Molecular Biologist at the University of Nottingham, and Health Information Data Scientist with the Farr Institute (@CIPHER) based at Swansea University. I have made significant contributions to research development, scientific output and teaching. I currently lead Phase 2 of the Wales Electronic Cohort for Children (WECC) study, which is an anonymised child population e-cohort focussed on understanding and improving health and well-being of children born to mothers resident in Wales, through the secondary use of routinely collected data.

Teaching

  • PM-007 Foundation Applied Medical Sciences Skills Development 1

    The module will provide the student with a diversity of study, laboratory and scientific skills in relation to the undertaking of undergraduate practical sessions in a safe manner. This will involve the development of skills including basic biologically relevant mathematics, appropriate data handling, working safely and key laboratory skills. Students will also be provided with an introduction to laboratory methods such as accurate pipetting and standard curve construction.In addition, students will receive lectures on developing study skills in literature searching, referencing & plaigarism and communication of information.

  • PM-138 Skills for Medical Sciences

    The aim of this module is to provide the student with basic skills required for laboratory research in the field of applied medical sciences. The module will be both theoretical and applied: the student will be instructed in methods essential for data acquisition and analyses but will also actively participate in the laboratory, using broadly applicable experimental techniques. They will also develop skills that are not experimental techniques themselves, but are nevertheless fundamental to the scientific process, such as `lab math,¿ sourcing information, referencing, ethics and health and safety.

  • PM-139 Human Physiology I

    This module aims to provide an understanding of the structure and function of key physiological systems of the human body. Human physiology is the study of how our body works in an integrated way. A central principle of human physiology is homeostasis, the maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment. Failure to maintain homeostasis disrupts normal function that may lead to disease (or pathophysiology). Students will be taught the key concepts of homeostasis in the physiological systems of the body, enabling the student to understand the consequences of pathophysiology to human health. Students will gain practical experience in assessing respiration and cardiac function during two separate laboratory based exercises

  • PM-141 Human Physiology II

    This module aims to provide students with further understanding of human physiology through studies on systems physiology including the endocrine, renal, blood, digestive/metabolism and reproductive system. The module will equally describe how malfunction of physiological systems gives rise to disease, using specific examples to enable students to appreciate the relationship between physiology/anatomy and medicine. Fundamental principles of physiology will be illustrated with appropriate clinical examples and during practical assignments.

  • PM-260 Bioethics

    Should we clone humans? What should we think of the coming genetic revolution? How much control should we have over how and when we dies? Is rationing health care good, bad, necessary or all of the above? This module will explore fundamental ethical issues that arise in medicine, healthcare and the life sciences. Some are as old as life itself: the vulnerability of illness, the fact of death. Some are new, brought on by a dizzying pace of technology that can unsettle our core ideas about human nature and our place in the world. Through an analysis of extant principles, theories and practices, this module aims to develop students' critical awareness of the moral, ethical and legal issues inherent within medicine, healthcare and the life sciences more broadly.

  • PM-261 Introduction to Pharmacology: Dynamics and Kinetics

    The aim of this module is to introduce students to basic principles of pharmacology, focussing on how drugs work on the human body (pharmacodynamics) and how the body works on drugs (pharmacokinetics). These discussions will be placed in the context of pharmacology as a discipline today and the emergence of biotechnology, including the sub-disciplines of pharmacogenomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and pharmacoeconomics. Alternative therapeutic principles will also be critiqued according to the scientific evidence base.

    Students will acquire a detailed knowledge of one topical research area of key importance to their particular degree scheme.

    This module provides a broad overview of various research methods, approaches and ethical considerations that could be used within the life sciences (with a specific focus on nanomedicine). This includes formulating answerable questions, searching for evidence and critical appraisal, research design decision making, introduction to statistical analysis and research ethics.

  • PMRM03 Research Leadership and Project Management

    This module explores the concepts, principles and applications of various approaches to research leadership and project management. This module focuses on analysing, identifying and developing personal qualities and strategies relating to research leadership. Through engagement in a range of activities aimed at developing self-awareness and insight, reflection, group skills and communication skills, students will be able to determine a personal development plan relating to continuing development in research leadership and project management.

  • PMRM07 Critical Appraisal and Evaluation (PT Research Only)

    This module will explore the key concepts and topics that are related to the research process from defining evidence based practice, reviewing the literature (systematic and narrative), formulating research questions, critical appraisal frameworks, research design (quantitative and qualitative), clinical audit and introduce the students to the application of data analysis.
