Dr A Cynfael Lake graduated in Welsh here in Swansea and has been a member of the Department of Welsh since 1996. He is currently a Reader and offers modules on the literature of the Middle Ages and the eighteenth century.
He has recently competed an edition of the work of Hywel Dafi, one of the fifteenth century’s most prolific poets, and the only major poet of that period whose work had not hitherto been edited. Dr Lake received a prestigious British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship for the 2012-13 session to enable him to undertake this task. As well as editing the works of several poets from the cywydd period for the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies ‘Beirdd yr Uchelwyr’ series, Dr Lake has written books and articles on several eighteenth century poets. One figure in particular whoses works he has studied is the ballad and interlude writer, Huw Jones of Llangwm.
