Biography

I joined the department having been a lecturer in International Relations at Oxford Brookes University. My ESRC-funded PhD was awarded by Birmingham University in 2008. In it, I explored the importance of narratives of time and history in the legitimisation and organisation of the Bush administration’s War on Terror. My MA in Political Science (Research Methods) was also completed within Birmingham University’s Department of Political Science and International Studies, and my BA in Politics at Nottingham University.

Current Research

I am currently involved in three projects based on my above research interests. The first of these, ‘Anti-Terrorism, Citizenship and Security in the UK’, explores the different ways in which contemporary anti-terrorism powers impact on people’s perceptions and experiences of security and citizenship. This project is funded by an ESRC award that I received in collaboration with Dr. Michael Lister of Oxford Brookes University. My second project is an exploration of a series of memorial websites established to commemorate the 9/11 attacks and their victims. I am also currently co-authoring a new book with colleagues from Aberystwyth University, entitled Terrorism: A Critical Introduction. This is due for publication by Palgrave in 2011. I will be taking up a post as a Visiting Research Fellow at Goldsmiths, University of London during my sabbatical in semester two of 2010-2011.
