Specialist Subjects: European Cinema, Ancient Greek Tragedy
After completing an undergraduate degree in Classics at Swansea University Ioannis received his MA in Ancient Greek Drama from the University of Nottingham. Between 2003-2005 he worked as a language tutor for the Cypriot Education Mission in London, teaching Modern Greek. He is currently a PhD student in the departments of Classics and Media and Communication Studies. His doctoral thesis is an examination of the relationship between Ancient Greek Tragedy and certain trends in contemporary European Cinema, with an emphasis on directors such as Michael Haneke, Lars von Trier and Lukas Moodyson, among others.
Since 2003 he has also composed incidental music for several theatrical performances and short films. Among them, Electra Landscape (2004), performed at the International Ancient Theatre Symposium in Delphi, Heiner Mueller's "Bildbeschreibung" (2005) and a music theatre adaptation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses VI (2006), performed in Athens, Greece), as well as short films (including the award-winning The Thought of The Day (dir. G. Gaitanidis [GR] 2005) and Messenger (dir. T. Langhis [GR], 2005).
He has also collaborated with visual artists and musicians on a number of installations and experimental improvisation projects, including the sound installation “A Throw of the Dice” (Dublin, 2005).
Ioannis is currently a teaching assistant on the level one modules Introduction to Film Studies, Film and Philosophy and Hollywood: A History of American Film , the level two module Film and Television Genre and the level three module Signing the Screen.
His other interests include sound on screen and contemporary Greek cinema.
