Dr Judi Atkins

Specialist Subjects: Political and Social Theory, British Politics, Modern Political Ideologies, Discourse Theory, Political Rhetoric and Argumentation

Biography

Judi joined the Department in 2008, having completed an ESRC-funded PhD at the University of Birmingham.  Her thesis examined the ways in which politicians use moral principles and arguments to win support for their policies, with particular reference to New Labour.  She has published a number of articles in this area and has presented papers at several academic conferences, including the Annual Conference of the Political Studies Association and the Conference on UK Political Ideologies.

Current Research

Judi currently works as Research Officer on Dr Alan Finlayson’s Leverhulme Trust funded project ‘How the Leader Speaks: British Political Rhetoric and Argumentation’.  This project explores the ways in which political speech in Britain has developed and changed since 1895 through a study of the speeches given by the leaders of the three main parties to annual conference.  Its main outputs will be an online database of the speeches, as well as several journal articles and a book.  She is also working on a monograph based on her doctoral research, entitled Justifying New Labour Policy, which is under contract with Palgrave Macmillan.
